For another day,The second tense to be introduced was

the”future in the past”. She explained the formation of this tense by

writing it on the board and supplementing it with an example sentence.

Students were also involved in reading a paragraph and the example

sentences from the book. Students were encouraged to ask for

clarification before being prompted to construct their own sentences

using this form. In addition to this kind of practice, the teacher

circulated in the room, observing and assisting when necessary.

Within the next 15 minutes the teacher elicited individual

sentences, commented on them, and discussed them with the students.

In a subsequent exercise, students were asked to replace “was

going to” by “would”. The students read out loud their sentences from

the book and the teacher provided feedback and clarification.

The next 15 minutes of the lesson were used for practicing

listening and writing skills through dictation. One of the student was

asked to read out loud a text once completely before starting to

dictate. The teacher wrote unfamiliar words on the board. The

teacher carefully monitored the speed of dictation in order to ensure

student-appropriate pacing. After the dictation exercise the writings

were checked by the teacher .

The next five minutes were conducted for discussions about class

issues.

In general, we could see that there was a good relationship between

the students and the teacher. Teacher advocates native language

usage in class. The composition of the class wouldn't allow that, either.

Students were engaged most of the time either in actively listening,

producing own sentences or discussing. They were given plenty of

opportunity to ask questions or make comments. In order to compose

sentences students had to use previously learned vocabulary and

grammar. I was also told by the teacher that this (grammar) was the

type of instruction the students preferred. Grouping strategies

occurred in so far that each student was grouped together with a

personal partner . Materials consisted of book and handouts which

seemed to be appropriate for this setting.

Overall, I believe that this lesson deserves this level.

Instruction was purposeful, students were highly engaged, the lesson
was well-designed and student interests and needs were met.
