This is a land with 1,000 years of history
and a unique fusion of eastern and
western cultures. This is a land where the

The cultural influences of east and west

can be seen in the monuments, traditions
and everyday life of todays Hungary.
Remains of the Roman Empire and a few
monuments from the 150-year Ottoman
occupation survive, and visitors can still
take a dip in a couple of original Turkish
baths in Budapest. Small medieval
churches and splendid basilicas, hilltop

The country takes pride in its ten national

parks, eight UNESCO World Heritage

Next to Balaton is Hvz, which is Central

If you travel south of Pannonia youll reach
the city of Pcs, which was selected as

The Pearl of the Danube
Hungarys capital is a place of a thousand
faces and offers a unique atmosphere.
The different layers of a colourful history
are preserved in its architecture, cafs,
cuisine and monuments a visit here
promises a truly authentic Central Eastern

The mighty Danube splits the capital in
two, separating the hills of Buda from the
flatland of Pest. The panorama here with
illuminated bridges spanning the water

During a dark period of Hungarys

history, the country fell to the Turks in
the 16th century. Is it possible that the
Ottomans invaded and stayed for 150
years because they were attracted by
the abundance of thermal water?!
A surviving architectural legacy of their
occupation can be seen in the Turkish
baths they built including the Rc
and Rudas in Budapest which are still
functioning today.

Everyone knows the importance of

facilities have grown up and continue
to develop around these waters. There
are few medium-sized towns in Hungary
without their own thermal baths.
All over the country, thermal water bubbles
and rushes beneath the Earths crust, so
its no surprise that searches for black
gold oil instead end time and again in
the discovery of new thermal springs. The
Creator has been good to the Magyars,
and white gold is a treasure used by
increasing numbers of health-conscious
people around the globe.
Emperors, kings, noblemen and famous
heads of state have found health and
relaxation in these traditional spas where

always played an important part in the

provision of healing and revitalising cures.
Attractive packages are now on offer at
modern four- and five-star wellness hotels,
aimed at those who enjoy being treated
like royalty.
Over 50 spa hotels have been constructed
to take advantage of the natural spring
waters. Guests often dont have to put a
foot outside if they fancy a dip in most
cases the water is piped into the hotel.
And you most certainly do not have to
be someone using the water to treat a
medical complaint. Pampering is available
for all!
The facilities are aimed equally at
relaxation and the prevention of illness,
and include balneotherapy, detoxification
and beauty cures, aromatherapy,
comprehensive massage services, and
a range of sporting activities. There is

With all the talk of water sports and
thermal springs, its easy to forget that
there are activities to enjoy on dry land
too! Indeed, Hungarys terra firma has a
great deal to offer the active visitor.

Today hunting is a much-loved sport. The

natural environment and well-organised
hunts attract visitors to Hungary all year
round to participate in this unforgettable
experience.

Hungary has a proud equestrian tradition,

and there remain many opportunities to
explore the countryside on four legs.

There are red, fallow and roe deer and

mouflon, to mention just a few of the larger
game species. Many hunting records have
been broken here, and many a hunter has
returned home from the Hungarian woods
with a world-class trophy. Small game
species thrive on the Great Plain and the
flatlands, and these areas are popular for
pheasant, rabbit and wild-duck hunting.

Horses have played an important role

in Hungarian history for thousands of
years. Our ancestors, who arrived from
the steppes of the Urals, conquered the
Carpathian Basin on horseback, and
Europe quaked in the face of Hungarian
arrows. Today there are Hungarian
cowboys who can ride eleven horses at
a fearful gallop, demonstrating perfect
harmony between horse and rider.
Hungarys relatively flat countryside, and
particularly its network of wetlands and
rivers, is ideal for riding tours. The country
is full of riding schools and many hotels
and country clubs offer riding facilities.

You can hunt in Hungary all year round,

with each season having its own
specialties. And of course this active
recreation also provides an excellent
opportunity to sample delicious local
