The International Phonetic Alphabet is a system used for describing the sounds of spoken language. It was originally developed by French and British language teachers under the auspices of the International Phonetic Association (IPA), established in Paris in 1886. The first official version of the alphabet appeared in 1888. The alphabet has experienced a number of revisions during its history, the most recent revision was launched in 1993 and updated again in 1996 to provide a system for more detailed transcription of voice production.
