Modified American Plan (MAP):

Full breakfast and lunch OR dinner are included daily.

American Plan (AP) or Full Pension/Full Board:

Price includes three meals a day.

European Plan (EP):

No meals are included.

Continental Plan (CP):

Continental breakfasts provided daily. In the Western Hemisphere, this usually means breakfast rolls and coffee or tea. More deluxe continental breakfasts can include fresh fruit, granola, yogurt, juices, coffee and breakfast rolls. In Europe it can also include cheeses and sliced meats.

Bermuda Plan (BP):

Full breakfast each day, usually including juice, eggs, toast, coffee and tea.

Types of Food Service


Butler Style: Usually refers to passed Hors d'oeuvres

White Glove Service:

Where any served food- hors d'oeuvres or the main meal- is served with whitegloved servers.

Displayed:

Refers to any food that is stationary where guests come up to the food station.

Family Style:

Platters and bowls of food are placed on the dining tables for guests to serve themselves.

Plated/Sit Down:

The food ispre-plated in the kitchen and served to already-seated guests.

Buffet:

Displayed food where guests either help themselves or there are attendants at the buffet to dish for the guests.

Food Stations:

A buffet that is spread out in different locations throughout the banquet room. Sometimes food stations can feature different themes at each station such as Italian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Seafood, Vegetarian, etc. Talk with your caterer about options and what they've done before.

Synchronized:

A very formal and specialized form of service that generally costs extra because extra labor is involved, this style has one server per dining guest. On cue, all meals are brought out at the same time, placed in front of each guest at the same time, and uncovered on cue. It is a very dramatic presentation and a wonderful pleaser if you are trying to impress a group of VIPs.
