vehicle.
When there are no cars or trucks on the
roads, men, wearing western sports-jackets
over their white robes and traditional
jumbiyya daggers, race through the streets
on the back of motorcycle taxis.
The drivers, in a nod to modern thinking about
safety helmets, often wear bright construction
hats, which look like they wouldnt protect
the wearers from a friendly pat.
Laptop computers are strewn about the

20

mafrag in our house. We use the top of a

traditional carved-out stone stove to store
cans, bread and vegetables.
But we cook on a modern stove, supplied
with tanks of gas carried up the stairs by
Nabeel.
Downstairs, a heavy arched wooden door
has a large black metal knocker so we can
hear guests banging from the roof.
Long ago, the door was bolted by a thick
wooden bar attached to a string that allowed
residents to open the door from the top floors.

Now it has a modern metal lock that requires

a key.
But when it rains, or gets cold, the weather
causes the heavy door to expand or contract.
The keys stick, and we wish the wooden-bar
and string system was still in tact.
Sometimes, 21st century technology does
not improve upon medieval ingenuity.
The old fortified city has been inhabited for
more than 2,500 years and contains a wealth
of intact architectural gems. It was declared
a world Heritage City by the United Nations

in 1986. Efforts are underway to preserve

some of the oldest buildings, some of which,
such as the Samsarh and the old Mosque, are
more than 1400 years old. Surrounded by
ancient clay walls which stand 9-14 metres
(30-46 ft) high, the old city contains more
than 100 mosques, 12 hammams (baths) and
6,500 houses. Many of the houses resemble
ancient skyscrapers, reaching several storeys
high and topped with flat roofs. They
are decorated with elaborate friezes and
intricately carved frames and stained-glass
windows.
One of the most popular attractions is Suq
al-Milh (Salt Market), where it is possible
to buy not only salt but also bread, spices,
raisins, cotton, copper, pottery, silverware,
antiques (both fake and real) and formerly
slaves. The majestic 7th-century Jami alKabir (Great Mosque) is one of the oldest
in the Muslim world. The Bab al-Yaman
(Yemen Gate) is an iconic entry point
through the city walls and is more than 1000
years old.
La budda min Sanaa (Sanaa must be
seen) are famous words first attributed to
Imam Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafiyi (768820) who visited the ancient capital several
times.
Many travellers in ancient days were
impressed by the beauty of Sanaa. The
well-known Yemeni geographer and
historian al Hamdani marveled at the
cleanliness of the city: It is the city of
Yemen - there not being found ... a city
greater, more populous or more prosperous,
of nobler origin or more delicious food than
it...
The least dwelling there has a well or
two, a garden and long cesspits separate
from each other, empty of ordure, without
smell or evil odors, because of the hard
concrete adobe(and Cob probably) and fine
pastureland and clean places to walk.
The British writer JONATHAN Raban
devotes a chapter of his 1979 book, Arabia
Through the Looking Glass to Sanaa. He
initially found the city disorienting:
Suddenly in Sanaa I was in the middle of a
real maze. Its walls were oppressively high,
its corridors narrow, its noise frightening.
Sanaa was functioning exactly as a
labyrinth should: it was a close protective
hive for insiders; but for an outsider it was a

trap with no apparent means of escape.

Later, as he became more familiar with the
place, and had made more acquaintances
with its residents, he becomes admiring. In
one striking sequence where he is invited
onto the roof of somebodys home, the
cityscape is revealed to him in a different
way:
It was like stepping out into the middle of
a vast pop-up picture book. Away from the
street, the whole city turned into a maze of
another kind, a dense, jumbled alphabet of
signs and symbols. The stucco friezes on
the towers formed a continuous scrawl of
handwriting around. You could look at the
walls of Sanaa for a year, finding more and
more hidden meanings in them.
Sanaa features the very rare mild version
of a desert climate. Sanaa sees on average
approximately 200 mm of precipitation per
year. However, due to its high elevation,
temperatures are much more moderate
than many other cities on the Arabian

peninsula . In fact, average temperatures

remain relatively constant throughout the
year in Sanaa, with its coldest month being
January and its warmest month in July. The
city seldom experiences extreme heat or
cold. However, some areas around the city
can see temperatures fall to around 15 or
20 degrees Fahrenheit during winter. Frost
usually occurs in the early winter mornings,
and there is a slight wind chill in the city
that causes the cold mornings to be oddly
bitter. The Sun warms the city to the 60s
during the noontime but it drops drastically
as night falls in. Sanaa receives half of its
annual rainfall during the months of July
and August. Rainfall comes depending on
the year; some years could see 500-600
mm of rainfall, while others can barely get
150 mm. High temperatures have increased
slightly during the summer over the past few
years, however, low temperatures and winter
temperatures have dramatically fallen over
the same period.

Modern life in the Old City of

Sana always reflects the elegant
scenery of the city. It was built
before the 11th century, and most
of the quarters is a historical
sight, protected by the UN.

The roads are cobblestone, and ancientlooking arched windows overlook walled
gardens and latticed mosque towers. But the
Old City is not a museum, and international
police officers do not roam the streets,
protecting unused architecture.
Day and night, the markets burst with
children and shops.
The home of the oldest city in the world has
plenty to offer in terms of cultural tourism,
but Yemen still needs a helping hand to
drive visitor numbers and attract quality
tourists.
History repeating itself..
Widely considered to be the cradle of
civillisation; Sanaa ancient capital has been
a melting pot for different Cultures and

civillisations since the history books began.

Our smiling hearts await to welcome you

Sanaa is Selling everything from handmade doors to deodorants to Yemeni raisins.
From the roof of our medieval house, we can
see the taxis below.
Because the roads are wide enough for only
one car at a time, when two face each other,
one has to back out.
Rarely, a driver bucks ahead as if to say,
me first! Most of the time, a mutual,
wordless agreement is reached and one car
backs up until they can make room for the
other to pass.

motorcycles and pedestrians stroll behind,

in concepts could be attributed mostly to the

impact of information and communication
technologies. That is not the case in general,
but more and more people are shaping their
lives and taking independent decisions
concerning their marriage without much
interference from their families. So far, the
outcome in most cases has been successful,

16

yet still, there are few cases of failure

and divorce. No matter what, the couples
are aware of their sole responsibility for
their choices and decisions and accept the
consequences. Generally speaking, a new
generation of Yemenis are having a better
grip in shaping and controlling their lives
and relationships. added al-Arasi.

Social networks provide a new platform

for friendship and dating
ICT has changed the way young people
interact socially; dating and marrying is
possible today in a very different manner
than old traditions that have always
been strictly controlled by socio-cultural
concepts. Digital communication has
increasingly replaced traditional forms of
interaction. Social networks offer youth
autonomy from families and provide more
instantly-gratifying, but less personal
interactions.
Face to face communication among
unrelated men and women is challenging
in Yemen and dating is prohibited and
rarely practiced among youths. However,
such networks have helped in crossing
societal barriers to satisfy curiosities. One
of the latest trends among Yemeni youth
is the excessive use of Facebook for social
networking finding it a perfect place for
dating.
Fundamentally, dating in the hopes of having
a meaningful relationship, is considered
a disgrace in Yemen. The authenticated
method for engagement and marriage is
often arranged by families and other people
that are considered acceptable according
to social standards. A relationship between
members of opposite sex is not permitted by
guardians and families unless an engagement
has already took place at least.
Regardless of all that, the youth of today are
using virtual social networks to bridge their
world of reality and reach out to find their
soul mates. They would usually inform and
convince their families about their choices
and decisions, but if that doesnt work,
they might complete their marriage project
without the involvement of their families.
Many young adults find social networks
such as Facebook an appropriate way to
search for a potential spouse and meet
members of the opposite sex. In some

instances, they end up engaging or marrying

through Facebook.
Najat Ali, a psychologist, explained the
reason behind such a tendency, youth
tend to be curious and have desire to know
more about members of the opposite sex,
especially in Yemen where males and
females are separated at early stages of
childhood due to social, religious and/or
traditional concepts.
Nevertheless, humans seek to fulfill their
communication necessities in different
ways. For Yemeni youth, Facebook is
currently the answer and prevalent in terms
of communication methods .
On Facebook, girls and boys have the
opportunity to find information about others,
see photos, and discuss matters using the
chat feature. For me, its a great chance to
get to know the girl Im dating. I can better
understand her attitude and interests from

the photos she posts and the groups she

joins, said Osamah Saad, 23.
A negative aspect of Facebook is ambiguity.
I urge boys to be careful about the girls
they meet on Facebook. It can be very
deceptive. From personal experience, I
advise boys to make sure that the girls they
are getting to know are real girls before
proceeding with their relationship. A few
months ago, I got to know what I thought
was a girl for weeks and at the end I found
out that the human behind the keyboard
on the other side was a guy who wanted to
make fun of me. I was so upset and angry
when I found out by calling to the girls
mobile number. It was so silly. said Munir
Mansour , 20.
From the girls perspective, Facebook is
the best and safest communication method.
I got to know many guys on Facebook
and once I feel that the guy was not my

type, I simply deactivate my account and

start another one. Another positive feature
of Facebook is that you can interact with
the friends of your friend and discover if
that guy is cheating all the girls on his list.
Mutual friends help also in revealing more
about his character and personality said
Manal Rajab, 19, a female college student.
Interestingly, dating on Facebook can
lead to real relationships like engagement
and marriage. I met my fianc online
after dating him for a couple of months. I
owe this to Facebook. We had so much in
common, we both felt a strong attraction, so
we decided to get engaged, Rasha Saeed,
21, female college students.
Rashas family was against the idea of
getting engaged at first, but the couple
were determined enough to fight for their
relationship and they eventually convinced
their families.

Modern
marriage
customs
in Yemen

Yemen, a country of diversity has many aspects that have never been told before.
Many reports have talked about marriage in Yemen mainly discussing arranged
marriage or child marriage; without paying any attention to other marriage customs
that exist in Yemen and represent its modern face.
That is marriage by mutual love of couples who are unrelated but got to know each
other and decided to marry, settle down and make their own family.
By Afrah Nasser

Marriage without family prearrangements

In addition to the so called traditional
marriage, which is arranged for by families
and decided solely by parents, there is
another type of marriage in Yemen that the
younger generation is adopting increasingly.
It is a relatively modern type of marriage in
Yemen, where the decision is made by the
couples themselves without the involvement
of their families.

14

The majority of Yemeni people believe

that marriage is a physical and a holy
bond between a man and a woman that
introduces love into their life after marriage.
Consequently, marriage follows a set of
specific traditions and customs; one would
be obeying parents will and desire at the
time of marriage by picking their choice
for either the bride or the groom explained
Amani al-Arasi, an academic researcher at
Social Science Dept., Sanaa University.

Traditionally, the socio-cultural factors play

a major role in shaping and timing marriage.
However, it seems that younger generations
are breaking the mold and setting new sociocultural factors for marriage customs in the
Yemeni society.
Today, the Yemeni youth is introducing
totally new socio-cultural concepts in
that regard. Many of them are taking
independent decisions in terms of when and
whom to marry. I believe that such a change

15

Like in landscape, diversity is also in customs, traditions and dialect

in this amazing province. You will find that too in traditional dress,
Jambiah, Khayzaran and straw hats, architecture, food, songs,
in the district is still useful to this day.
Shomookh Annaser is a must-see castle
in Mabyan thats towering over hills and
terrains with valleys falling away behind,
where the contrast of nature reveals genuine
beauty. The area offers a wonderful
opportunity for paragliding.
Shaharah
As once said, fortified mountain castles
and fortresses are two a penny in Yemen,

12

but Shaharah remains a different story. It

is incredibly impregnable and has never
been conquered by an invading army.
Shaharah is located 2600m above sea level.
The famous bridge of Shaharah is another
authentic example for the ingenuity of
Yemenis in architecture. It was built almost
five centuries ago to connect two villages
separated for centuries back by the deep
gorge at a couple of hundred meters height
from the ground.

Trekking
Most of the Hajjas highlands surely
represent some of the best opportunities
for trekking. Especially, that the distances
between villages are short, with plenty
of picturesque and stupendous views,
fascinating landscape, remarkable
architectural style and helpful people. The
climb up from plains to those mountainous
villages gives an idea why invaders
repeatedly failed to break down the defenses

of such places. Some of the most famous

mountains of Hajja are:
Afar Mountain that has the ancient Kohlan
Afar fort at its peak.
Hajja Mountain with the Kawkaban Hajja
Fort.
Maswar Mountain, which has several forts
at Qodom and the Annasirah, Eljahili and
Addafeer forts of Mabyan.
Sharafain Mountain Range including the
mountains of Hajoor. Many fortresses are
located there on mountain peaks such as
the forts of: Ash-Shahel, Qofleh, Kohlan
ElSharaf, Aslam and many other forts.
Parrallel to Sharafain Mountains to the north
are those mountains of Wash-ha, which
have a number of important peaks such as
Elmuashah, Elqara and Qushar mountains.
These also have numerous fortified villages,
forts and old schools.

Hajja Coasts
As the highway follows the Westland,
the landscape changes dramatically in the
transition from western mountain slopes
toward the coasts. The coastal area, often
called the hot land or Tihama the low
land, is a desert-like plain 30 to 40 km
wide. Many beautiful beaches face the Red
Sea in the areas of Haradh and Meedi.
Customs and traditions
Like in landscape, diversity is also in
customs, traditions and dialect in this
amazing province. You will find that too
in traditional dress, Jambiah, Khayzaran
and straw hats, architecture, food, songs,
music and dance; a diversity that reflects
differences between the mountain and plain
communities.

Handcrafts:
Hajjas mountain and plain communities
have several handicraft products. Among
these are the elaborately-made Khayzaran
hats, stone pots and jars and potteries.
Hajja Souqs
There are several weekly souqs in Hajja
where the diversity of communities and
handicraft products can be easily spotted.
These are some of the Souqs that could be
attended by visitors and tourists:
Wadi Shares Sunday Souq
Kohlan Afar Monday Souq
Mabyan Wednesday Souq
Haradh Tuesday Souq
Attoor Friday Souq
Abss Souq of Wednesday
and Thursday
Shammar Tuesday Souq

Mahabsha
Mahabsha, the pearl of Sharafain district and
its capital, is located on a mountain range
of astonishing and unique beauty. Rising
high over green valleys, the landscape is
breathtaking; with scattered villages on

10

peaks and mountainsides. The scene of

agricultural terraces climbing up all the way
to mountain tops is very much a showcase
for the challenge of man and nature. A story
that seems to be very old as told by the
ancient buildings and fortresses that you find

almost everywhere you go to confirm that

Yemen is truly one of the oldest centers of
civilization in the Middle East .
Mabyan
To the north of Hajja town is Mabyan,

another fabulous place that is boasting its

own natural beauty. Again the mountains
rising steeply to 2300m are lined with
hundreds of intricately fashioned terraces.
These are part of an age-old but highly
sophisticated system of water and soil

management that enabled an agriculturebased society to flourish in an otherwise

hostile environment. The terraces of Mabyan
are used to cultivate the famed Yemeni
coffee, which has always been among the
most highly praised in the world for its

distinct flavor and authentic taste. Wadi

Moor (Moor Valley) surrounds Mabyan
from East to West dividing the mountains
and moving heavy seasonal rainfall toward
the sea. The Bazel dam is one of its old
landmarks. The dam, which is the biggest

From eagle-nest fortified mountain villages and fairy tale fortresses

perched on hills, spectacular terrains, jaw-dropping scenery and
views looking over towns and villages to the delighting legacy of its
people, Hajja is definitely the target for tourists seeking to explore
unique places.

Hajja..
The Enchanting Land of Fog
A veil of mist that covers its hills and
mountains many times around the year,
gives it the name of the land of fog.
All that, in addition to Hajjas mighty
presence in Yemens profound history
has attracted enough attention from the
Authority of Tourism to drag it into its
vision and to promote the province as a
promising attractive tourist centre.

Hajja town is the capital of the province

with an altitude of 1800m above sea level.
Located on the highest peak of Hajja is
the famous Alqahera fortress Fortress of
Impregnability, which has stood there
overlooking the town for the first time ten
centuries ago. Till 1962, and before the
revolution broke out, the large underground
prisons of the fortress were used to house

hostages from tribes and those who were

considered by the Imam as the most
dangerous Yemeni leaders and rebels
who fought against his regime. Today, the
fortress is a tourist attraction.
Stunning Scenery and Glorious Culture
Hajja province has so many enchanting places
to see, among of which are the following:

Dear passengers and Yemenia clients:

Welcome aboard. On behalf of my co-workers, thank you for choosing
Yemenia Airways for your flight today. We will always work hard to ensure
that passenger safety, welfare, and comfort is consistently maintained on
this and every flight you take with us.
I wanted to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thanks to every single
co-worker in Yemenia for their dedication and professionalism in handling
their tasks and their valuable contributions to the continuous development
efforts of the company.

Captain AbdulKhalek S. Alkadi

Chairman

The Wings of Harmony

Yemenias corporate culture has always
been passionate about creating a great
place to work for its employees. A culture
that attracts, develops, nurtures and
retains talent and creates an environment
that fosters employee innovation and
effort, commitment and cooperation. An
environment that prohibits workplace
discrimination based on religion,
origin, ideology, sex or political views.
Yemenia values inclusiveness as an
essential source of vitality and strength
for the effective pursuit of its mission.
Based on the values imbedded in our
policies, we embrace and celebrate the
rich dimensions of diversity contained
within each individual. I dont think
its exaggerating to say that Yemenis
in general are well aware of such facts
about their national carrier; especially,
those who worked for this company,
including myself.
Since I joined Yemen Airways at the

beginning of the eighties as a Boeing 727

captain pilot in command, then a senior
captain/trainer for the same aircraft
and later on as the Fleet Manager, I
have always been influenced by that
professional culture and valuable spirit
that was adopted by every division and
department of this company. I have
worked hard with my co-workers to
maintain and develop that culture even
after moving to work as the operation
manager and a Boeing 747 captain pilot
in command. That also remained a top
priority for me after being appointed at
a later stage as the Chairman of Yemen
Airways and until this very moment.
Perhaps, a significant factor in such a
success would be that Yemen Airways
is one of the most admirable airlines in
the region that combines accumulated
knowledge and technical competence, in
addition to the experience and culture of

two creditable airline carriers in Yemen

and the region, the Yemda and Yemenia.
The maintenance and development of
such a culture and philosophy wouldnt
have been possible without the continuous
and collective efforts of more than four
thousand of Yemen Airways employees
striving for excellence and working hard
to get you to your destination safely
and on time. This celebrated culture of
our organisation has always provided
the sense of belonging and maintained
the spirit of collaboration among our
people. Our core values shall always
remain to be the driving force behind the
overall success of Yemenia; maintaining,
protecting and enhancing its growth and
performance in the skies no matter how
stormy or dark they become.
I really wish that such a unique
culture is adopted in all other national
corporations and companies. It is
extremely important to look into diversity

as an opportunity and not an issue.

Our generational differences, differing
political views and cultural differences
make us different from one another.
Yet, every one of us represents value
to our organisations because of those
differences. A wide breadth of differences
is an asset that strengthens organisations
through a broad array of ideas, beliefs,
capabilities, talents and skills. Yemen,
on top of all that, should always come
first in the agendas, plans and goals of
all Yemenis. In such a way, Yemenis can
protect their country and fortify it against
all kinds of conspiracies and during bad
and even worst times, while continuing
their efforts of engineering and creating
a brighter and a more prosperous future
for Yemen.
Dear passengers,
Yemenia has welcomed two brand
new Airbus A320 aircrafts into its

fleet. On this occasion, I would like to

congratulate you, our clients, my coworkers and myself too. The arrival of
these new aircrafts marks the start of the
airlines re-fleeting programme, which
includes ten new A320s being some of
the worlds most modern and popular
aircrafts. This represents another
step towards achieving our mission to
modernize our fleet, which makes us
more operationally efficient and reliable
whilst at the same time fulfils our
commitment to improve products and
services for our valuable customers and
ensure their comfort and satisfaction.
It is also an important advancement
towards delivering a national airline
that we can be proud of.
From all of us at Yemen Airways, thank
you for flying with us today. We hope you
enjoy your flight, and we look forward to
seeing you again soon on another flight
on Yemenias wings of harmony.
