SHOWCASE MAHER ZAIN

SAVE
THE
SOUL

Maher Zain is the new star of modern Islamic Music with his
meaningful songs that aim to inspire and entertain people and
send a message of peace and hope to the world.
Leaving behind a lucrative career in the mainstream music
industry in New York wherein he worked with internationally
renowned producer RedOne who has worked with chart-topping
artists Akon, Lady Gaga, Enrique Iglesias and the late Michael
Jackson to mention just a few, Maher chose instead to make
music which reflects his roots of being both European, Arab
and Muslim and he is working with Awakening Records (who
launched the career of British artist Sami Yusuf) to inspire the
youth across the world.
In January 2010, in a music competition organized by Nujoom
FM (Egypts biggest music radio station) Mahers track Ya Nabi
Salam Alayka was voted as the Best Song for 2009. Runners up
included big names like Hussein Aljismi, Mohammed Mounir
and Sami Yusuf. Maher has already performed at sold out
concerts in Algeria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, England,
France, Holland, Sweden, and the US amongst others and is fast
becoming the next superstar of Islamic music.
Maher Zains album mixes the sounds of R&B with traditional
spiritual, soul and contemporary pop music, not just updating
spiritual music and inshad but fearlessly reviving it with
contemporary flair. Mahers debut album Thank You Allah is an
instant classic of great power and timeless, unassailably intense
spirituality.
Mini concert Maher Zain Save The Soul will be organized
entirely by Raudhatus Sakinah. Raudhatus Sakinah is an

Perlis to Establish Halal Park Soon

The Perlis state government is to
establish a Halal Park in Padang
Besar soon to produce products for
the local and international market.
The development covers 40.47
hectares (100 acres) at an estimated
investment of RM100 million,
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Md Isa
Sabu told Bernama after visiting
the China (Ningxia) International
Investment and Trade Fair on
Yinchuann (Chinal) on Sunday, Sept
27
Md Isa was leading a delegation
which included the Malaysian
Ambassador to China Datuk
Iskandar Sarudin, in visiting the
Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in
conjuction with the trade fair.
More than 15 Malaysian companies
and the Kelantan State Economic
Development Corporation have
taken up more than 40 booths at the
fair to promote local products.
It is important to have the Perlis
Halal Park located at the MalaysiaThailand border, as we can easily
transport and market halal products
internationally, Md Isa said.
He added that there was not only

demand for halal products locally,

but also among Muslims in Southern
Thailand and other countries
regionally, as a section of the
international market.
The Ningxia Hui and Xinjiang
Autonomous Regions in China have
a big Muslim population.
My visit here in Ningxia is to
explore trade opportunities and
attract investments into Perlis, the
Menteri Besar, explained.

He also expressed the desire to bring

in halal food industries from China,
and help them market their products
in Malaysia and globally with the
Perlis Halal Park serving as an outlet
for this purpose.
I also want halal industries in Perlis
to interact with their counterparts in
China, so that we can bring products
mutually into each other markets,
he said.
Apart from halal industries, Md Isa
highlighted that Perlis is also seeking
to attract Chinese investment in the
engineering and hi-tech sectors.
I understand that there are many
Chinese companies specialised in
engingeering and hi-tech products.
We encourange them to invest in
Malaysia, especially in Perlis, he
added.
He said, Perlis has established the
Pauh High Tech Industrial Park and
given many incentives to attract hitech companies.
After visiting the trade fair, Md Isa
and Iskandar met with the Governor
of Ningxia, Wang Zhengwei,
to discuss trade and investment
cooperation.Bernama.

Media Industry
Rakes In RM3.5
Billion for First Six
Months Of 2010
The media industry in Malaysia
reported a positive performance
for the first six months of this
year, breaching the RM3.5 billion
mark for the first time, Deputy
Minister of International Trade
and Industry Datuk Mukhriz
Mahathir said on Oct 1, 2010.
He said free-to-air television
recorded the most impressive
advertising expenditure growth,
reaching RM1.3 billion.
Those numbers show that
Malaysian companies have
realised the importance of the
new media in order to succeed in
this highly competitive market,
Mukhriz said at the Malaysia
EFFIE Award 2010 ceremony,
here Friday.
He added branded companies,
products and services would
continue to see sustainable
profitability.

MIDA Eyeing More Foreign

Investments In Aerospace Industry
The Malaysian Investment
Development Authority (MIDA)
is looking to bringing in more
foreign investments especially in the
aerospace industry, says its DirectorGeneral Jalilah Baba.
She said the government is giving
emphasis and priority to the industry
by giving it the best incentives.
Pratt & Whitney, an American
aircraft engine manufacturer, has
expressed its interest to look at
Malaysia seriously, she told a press
conference at the two-day Dawn
of the New Decade: Alternative
Internative in Asia forum, which
8

Malaysia & the Arab World October 2010 / Issue 22

took off in Kuala Lumpur, Monday,

Sept 27 We have just completed
negotiations with them (Pratt &
Whitney). I think they are coming
and talking to a few Malaysian
aerospace companies, she said.
Malaysia has good aerospace
companies and they are in the
forefront, she added. Jalilah said
MIDA will also continue to keep
a friendly environment to attract
more foreign direct investments
into the country. It will look at the
issues faced by investors, she said,
adding that MIDA currently had
20 overseas centres. Meanwhile,

Malaysia Can Strengthen

Position In Islamic
Finance, Says Expert
Malaysia can strengthen its position
as a leader in global Islamic finance
by exploring further important
Islamic principles, according to an
industry expert.
Such principles can complement
not only the product creations and
innovation but also support the
Islamic finance foundation, said
Dr Armen V. Papazian, currently
a fellow at the University of
Cambridges Judge Business School.
Papazian said Malaysia was already
recognised as a leader and innovator
in developing the economics and
structure of Islamic finance.
I believe Malaysias effort and
strategic support of Islamic finance
has been critical variables in
the development and growth of
the industry as a whole. I think
Malaysia can do more by exploring
its potential exponentially, he told
reporters at the Invest Asia 2010
forum, organised by the International
Herald Tribune, in Kuala Lumpur on

Monday Sept 27.

Papazian was formerly head of
Islamic finance at UBS Investment
Bank with a global and crossbusiness mandate to lead the
business. He was among the
speakers at the two-day forum which
started Monday.
Across the Islamic world today,
money is been created through
conventional methodology, even in
Malaysia. I think it is critical for the
country to explore how deep Islamic
finance can go, especially in terms
of whether it can be used for money
creation or just product industry,
Papazian said.
He said it was still early to say
whether Islamic finance will become
dominant in the future against the
conventional system, especially
with Islamic finance accounting for
less than one per cent of total global
conventional finance.

Iskandar Malaysia Has

Exceeded Targets, Says Ghani
MIDAs chairman, Tan Sri Dr
Sulaiman Mahbob said there was
a need to liberalise more of the
services sector to welcome more
investments into the country.
We want to make sure the services
sector contribute 60 per cent or
more to the countrys growth.
MIDA is working hard to promote
the services sector, he said during
a panel session entitled Traditional
versus Alternative InvestmentChallenges and Opportunities in
the new decade moderated by
IHT chief editor for Asia, Philip
McClellan. Bernama.

Despite the recent economic

slowdown, the Iskandar Malaysia
project launched in 2006 has
exceeded the targets set for it, says
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul
Ghani Othman.
Abdul Ghani, who co-chairs the
Iskandar Regional Development
Authority (IRDA), said Iskandar
Malaysias year-to-date cumulative
investment up to July this year, stood
at RM63.09 billion.
That is a RM7.53 billion increase
from December last year, he
said during the opening of HSBC
Amanah Malaysias, Nusa Bestari
Branch, in Johor Baharu. Monday,
Sept 27.
The event was also attended by

HSBC Amanah Head, Mukhtar

Hussain.
According to Abdul Ghani, 40.6 per
cent of the committed investments in
Iskandar Malaysia have been spent
to date, with project implementation
progressing rapidly.

TOURISM

Melaka River...
Tourists Destination
Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam Giving Dr. Abdulrahim Abdulwahid A Book About Melaka River

or revolting scenarios where rubbish was

seen dumped into the river. Instead there
are stunning landscapes that attract the
attention of the camera-happy tourists on the
rivercruise boats.
Now Sungai Melaka is a major tourist
attraction for this world heritage city and
also part of Melakas economic cake.

RIVER BEAUTIFICATION
PROJECT
A holiday in Melaka is considered
as incomplete without getting on
a cruise along Sungai Melaka that
snakes through this historical city.
The beauty of this river, enhanced
via efforts of the state authorities,
exudes more brilliance at night
due to the thousands of lighted
bulbs strung on new and heritage
buildings as well as on trees that
lined the 4.5km stretch of the river
right from the spice park to the
estuary.
Tourists can hop on 40 boats provided by
Melaka River Cruise, a company owned by
the Melaka River and Coast Development
Corporation (PPSPM). The cruise is on from
9.30am until midnight daily.
More than 40,000 tourists visited the river
each month and they enjoy taking the river
cruise, PPSPM Chief Executive Officer
Baharom Majid told Bernama in Melaka,
Oct.

COMMERCIAL SERVICE

Baharom said the Melaka River Cruise

began as a commercial venture in 2006 with
two boats which saw the service attracting
3,290 passengers that year. The figure shot
to 51,100 visitors in 2007 with 12 boats in
service, followed by 350,000 people in 2008
with 20 boats available.
The figure for 2009 was 591,000 people

Malaysia & the Arab World October 2010 / Issue 22

with 30 boats in use. He said the PPSPM

targets 600,000 visitors (with 40 boats in
service) this year.
Baharom said the number of visitors is
expected to increase due to the intensive
roadshows staged by the PPSPM locally
and abroad with collaboration of the state
and tourism authorities including Tourism
Malaysia.
Various packages are on offer for tourists
like that for holding dinners and wedding
functions on the boats. Tourist guides wellversed in the history of Melaka and also on

facts of the river are also provided.

The Melaka River Carnival held annually
has also attracted both the domestic and
foreign tourists, he added.

MELAKA TREE, MURAL

PAINTINGS

Among the objects that lined the riverbanks

which captured the tourists attention and
their cameras are the mural paintings on
walls of buildings as well as the Melaka
tree, from where the state got its name.
Soon the visitors would be able to enjoy

Sarawak to Introduce
Tourism Product
The Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), the state tourism marketing and
promotions arm, is embarking on a quest to introduce tourism product
inventory system based on market segment, products delivery and
experience, its chief executive officer Datuk Rashid Khan said Friday.
He said the system was an integrated package for all tourist agents to

The transformation of Sungai Melaka can be
tagged as out of the ordinary.
From a river which was once muddy and

The Melaka River Beautification

Programme was inspired by a similar effort
done on San Antonio river in Texas, United
States which is famous for its beauty and
able to draw some 13 million tourists a year.
The programme to enhance the beauty of
Melaka river was implemented under four
phases at the cost of RM30 million that
began in 2002.
PPSPM was given the task of regaining the
glory of Melaka river, once known as the
Venice of the East when it became the
trading point for merchants from the East
and West.
Sungai Melakas estuary is at Bandar Hilir

here and the river flows into the Melaka

Straits. The river, which was at the peak of
its glory during the Melaka Malay Sultanate,
gradually lost its lustre under the rule of the
colonialists - Portuguese, Dutch, British and
Japanese.

NEW ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

The pro-active measures implemented by the

Melaka government. spearheaded by Chief
Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, in
the development of Sungai Melaka over the
past decade had ignited and catalysed new
economic activities along the river stretch.
Mohd Ali who expressed confidence in the
rivers potential has invited entrepreneurs to
establish, among others, hotels, restaurants
and gift shops along the river, at the cost
expected to reach more than RM1.0 billion.
Apart from the existing ones, more hotels
will be built along Sungai Melaka including
that by Uda Holdings Berhad, he said. He
also said the residents of Kampung Morten,
the old Malay settlement in the heart of this
world heritage city, would soon be selling
souvenirs to tourists.

promotion campaign in Singapore to woo neighbouring

tourists to visit Sarawak.
He said the key performance index (KPI) would be
introduced to measure the products performance,
including the number of tourist arrivals, hotel occupancy,
product experience and delivery.
The product delivery and experience aim to enrich the
life of the tourist and not the procedures of doing things
but the significance behind it, he added.
Rashid urged industry players make the tourism products
sustainable to meet the needs of tourists.
The maintenance, innovation, development and
improvement of the products are all dependable on the
private sector. They must invest time and effort to make
sure their products will be sustainable in delivery, he
said.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak

Prime Minister of Malaysia

6% Growth
for Malaysia
The country is poised to register at least a six per cent gross
domestic product (GDP) growth in 2010, fuelled mainly by domestic
demand and consumption, while external factors remain somewhat
dampening.
We believe we can achieve quite a robust growth this year. We
should end up with at least six per cent, Prime Minister Datuk Seri
Najib Tun Razak said in an interview with Martin Soong in The
CNBC Conversation on Sept. 11.
He said despite a staggering 9.5 per cent growth in the first half of the
year, it was overall moderate due to an expectation of the momentum
tapering off in the second.
The Prime Minister said the GDP growth for the first and second
quarter of 2010, was 10.1 per cent and 8.9 per cent respectively.
In the first half of the year, the countrys growth was driven by
sustained expansion in domestic demand and robust growth in
external demand.
Najib said under the New Economic Model (NEM), the government
has identified where the new sources of growth are going to come
from, including how to resuscitate the domestic private economy.
We want the private sector to play a more dominant role. In fact, we
have stated very clearly that to achieve our lofty targets, we have to
raise RM150 billion annually in terms of total investment.
Thats a huge undertaking.Hence, the government has to address
some of the concerns with respect to skills, for example.
We must ensure we move up the value chain in terms of the skills
level, so we have to prime up the human capital development, he
added.
Najib said the country also needs to look at new growth sources,
and it can come not only from consumption and demand, but also
innovation.
If you want to get to six per cent, seven per cent (GDP growth), then
innovation will be the key enabler to achieve that, he explained.
