Over the years, the food pyramid has gone through drastic changes. It first started as a dietary guideline in the late 1800s.Not much was enforced but it was the starting point for the future that would become the food pyramid. Later it was emphasized in a bulletin, telling consumers a healthy way to eat food. But it wasnt until 1917 when the USDA first came out with a guide informing people of a healthy way people could eat. This food chart contained 5 groups to consider when eating food. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Milk and meat Cereals Vegetables and fruits Fats and fatty foods Sugars and sugary food.

As the years went by, scientist and nutritionist established a more precise chart. From having only five main groups to changing it up to seven groups to simply making it completely different, the food pyramid has gone through multiple changes yet contains a main purpose; keeping people healthy.

The first chart above was designed in 1946 vs the second chart which was designed in 2011.
