COURSE FEATURES:

A. Course materials will be handed out in lecture
B. Students are to keep a log oI weekly tasks perIormed in the dental
C. Instructor will do an on-site visitation and evaluation once every 4 weeks
D. OIIice will complete an evaluation oI student every Iour weeks
E. Students need to respect the privacy oI the patients
F. Students must Iollow all OSHA regulations
G. Students will Iollow the same uniIorm code as wet Ior the Campus Dental Clinic
H. Students are expected to adhere to the policies oI the externship oIIice
I. Students are expected to take directions and constructive guidance
J. Students are to Iollow the hours oI the externship oIIice not to exceed 33 hours a week
K. Students are to bring required materials to the lecture class weekly
L. Students need are to conduct themselves in a proIessional manner and demonstrate a positive work
ethic
M. Students may Iail the externship iI: miss assign ed days or arrive late; student is unprepared
mentally and physically; is disruptive; actions endanger the saIety and welIare oI patients and
staII; or is using or demonstrates impaired Iunction due to drugs
alcohol, or other chemical substances; and
N. Students are expected to attend Friday`s lectures
O. Students will rotate through the Campus Dental Clinic as a component oI their clinical hours
P. Students will Iollow the meeting and lunch schedules oI assigned oIIices
Q. During the lecture, students will share experiences, concerns and problem solve. Students need to
be respectIul oI the dental oIIice employees and not discuss lecture content or classroom
discussions
R. Dental practices do not operate exactly like the Campus Dental Clinic. Students need to be
Ilexible and remember all clinical experiences are learning opportunities.

FINANCIAL AID:

Students receiving Iinancial aid should ALWAYS check with the Financial Aid oIIice prior to withdrawing, signing
an incomplete contract, or receiving an F or V grade.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS AND EXPECTATIONS:

Learning experiences are designed to achieve the course objectives.

This is a lecture/clinical course. The purpose oI the externships and rotations through the Campus Dental Clinic is
to provide the student with opportunities to be involved in aiding in providing patients dental care as a contributing
member oI a dental health care team. The purpose oI the lecture is to review materials as appropriate and to share
experiences and problems solve concerns as they may arise.

GRADING CRITERIA.
Grades are based on points earned/averaged Ior the Iollowing activities:
A. Attendance: both during externship activities and the weekly lecture
B. SuccessIul completion oI the externships as observed through the use oI the instructor`s and
oIIice`s evaluations
C. Completing weekly log oI tasks perIormed in the oIIice and journal inIormation
D. Student evaluation oI Session A and Session B

GRADING SCALE:

94-100 A
87-93 B
86-76 C
72-75 D
71-0 F

SUPPORT SERVICES:

Library, Writing and Math Centers, Computer Lab, Disability Services, Tutoring is available to students in technical
programs.

EVALUATION STATEMENT

A. Evaluation will be based upon points averaged Irom the Grading Criteria listed above.

DENT. 180 CLINICAL EXPERIENCES

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Students are assigned to oII campus dental practices in the community and rotate through the Campus Dental Clinic.
Emphasis is on the student`s chairside assisting, patient management skills, applying team concepts, and
proIessionalism. Students are assigned two clinical sessions: Iour weeks in each session. Each session is in a
diIIerent dental Iacility.

COURSE OUTCOMES:

Upon completion oI this course, the successIul student will be able to demonstrate an understanding oI the dental
assistant`s responsibilities by;

A. Assisting the dentist in restorative, preventive, diagnostic and surgical procedures;
B. Using universal precautions as per OSHA / WISHA guidelines;
C. Preparing treatment rooms Ior patients;
D. Breaking down treatment rooms aIter procedures to include;
1. Removing contaminated barriers and items
2. DisinIecting surIaces
3. Clearing water lines
4. Placing new barriers
5. Biohazard waste disposal
6. Use oI personal protective equipment as appropriate
7. Setting out the correct procedural tray and records Ior the next patient
E. Managing patient records to include making accurate chart entries
F. PerIorming chairside assisting skills in accordance with the State Dental Practice Act
G. Demonstrating proIessionalism
H. Using appropriate terminology
I. Wearing appropriate PPE`s
J. Processing instruments Ior re-use
K. Following HIPAA regulations
L. Being a positive contributing member oI the dental team in the delivery oI dental services
