 Where the Mind is without Fear

Summary

The poet wants his country to awake as a country where the

mind of the people is fearless, the head remains high with glory
and there is no restriction in gaining knowledge. The country
and people are not divided due to petty issues. The truth exists
every where. Tireless efforts work to create perfection in
everything. Where the reason or wisdom never forgets the way
of goodness. Mind is always thinking forward for widening
thoughts and actions. The poet wants that into this heavenly
atmosphere his country awakens lives and breathes.
Q1.The poet wants his country to awake in to a heaven
of Freedom. What are the freedoms that he mentions?
A1. The poet wants the freedom of mind, freedom of
acquiring knowledge and freedom from narrow
boundaries over small things.

A2. Narrow domestic walls of caste, creed, language
culture and habits etc.

poem, what sort of a place is the present world?
A3. As compared to the ideas given in the poem this
world is not according to the dreams of the poet. But,
the poet wants to have a perfect world of freedom and
atmosphere to live in.
 Paraphrase

I. Where the World----------------------------------------towards perfection.

The poet wants to have a world of his dreams where people are not
divided over small things, they are truthful and work hard to create
perfection.

II. Where the mind----------------------------------------------country awake.

The poet thinks of having a world where the mind is let free to widen the
scope of thinking and working. He wants that in such a heavenly world
his country men should awake and live.

III. Central Idea of the Poem

The central idea of the poem ‘Where the mind is without
Fear’ written by Rabindranath Tagore is to have a perfect
heavenly world where there is freedom of thought, work,
where there are no narrow divisions due to small things.
People think better and live better together.
