Day One

1. Using the LDC projector, the teacher will display the video of cell mitosis.
2. KWL chart about what is already known about the cell cycle and what the
students want to know
3. Introduce the essential questions
4. Introduce the performance task
5. Students will be assigned to a computer and directed to the following websites –
http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/index_tj.asp?objid=AP13604

http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/cells/mitosisjava/mitosisjava.html

At the molecular expressions website, students will complete the interactive tutorial.
6. Students will then complete an assessment at

Day Two

1. Students will be assigned to a computer and directed to the following websites –

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/baby/divi_text.html

http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio/tutorials/cell_cycle/main.html

2. Students will work through the PBS NOVA tutorial . At the Biology Project
site, students will work through the cell cycle tutorial and complete the ‘test
yourself’ component, which they will print out and save in their notebooks.

Day Three

To practice cell stage identification, students will visit the “Online Onion Root Tips”
activity at the Arizona Biology Project. After reading the instructions, students will
complete the activity and record the data in their notebooks.
http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio/activities/cell_cycle/cell_cycle.html

Students will be given instructions for writing a spreadsheet and creating a graph.

After creating their graphs, students will be given a slide and a picture of an onion root
tip and directed to their lab tables. Students will use a microscope to examine their
prepared slide. They will focus on the root tip and the cell division area. Using the
photograph, students will classify each cell based on its current stage in the cell cycle and
record the data. After copying and pasting their practice page into Sheet 2, students will
enter this data into their spreadsheets. Students will save their data on a flash drive and
then add their data to the class’s data. The teacher will use the LCD projector to display
the data to the class. While viewing the class data, students will complete a mitosis
worksheet.
