Assignment 5: Plane (2-D) Stresses

Class Work: 1. Given the following stress tensor:

(a) Draw the corresponding stress cube. (b) Construct the three Mohrs circles for the given stress state. (c) Compute the two principal stresses and maximum shear stress. (d) Determine the normal and shear stresses, which acts upon a surface corresponding to a 30 clockwise rotation of the x-face. 2. Draw the Mohr's circles and determine the magnitudes of the principal stresses for the following stress states. Denote the principal stress state (direction) on a suitably rotated stress square. a. x = 30 MPa, y = 10 MPa, xy = 25 MPa. b. x = 30 MPa, y = 90 MPa, xy = 40 MPa. c. x = 10 MPa, y = 20 MPa, xy = 15 MPa. Home Work: 3. For a stress state defined by: x = 10 MPa, xy = yx = 40 MPa, y = 50 MPa. find: a) The value of the Principal Stresses. b) The maximum Shear Stress and the corresponding Normal Stress. Solve the problem both analytically and graphically using Mohrs Circle and compare between the two solutions. 4. Sketch the Mohr's circles for each of the stress states (stress squares) shown in the figure.
