Geometric Approach to Active Packet Loss Measurement Abstract:

Measurement and estimation of packet loss characteristics are challenging due to the relatively rare occurrence and typically short duration of packet loss episodes. The packet loss ratio is among the most important metrics for identifying poor network conditions, since it highly affects data throughput performance and the overall end-to-end data transfer quality. The cost for passive monitoring is often high, in terms of data storage requirements, and access to links or routers is frequently not possible across administrative domains. Active probe tools are commonly used to measure packet loss on end-to-end paths but there has been little analysis of the accuracy of these tools or their impact on the network. Some active tools, like Poisson-modulated probe tool, show that loss characteristics reported can be quite inaccurate over a range of traffic conditions. The objective here is to measure packet loss episodes accurately with end-to-end probes. Here, the interest is on two specific characteristics of packet loss: loss episode frequency, and loss episode duration. Loss episode duration is the duration of time between start and end of packet loss. The loss episode frequency is the number of loss episodes occurring in particular time duration. A new algorithm for active packet loss measurement is introduced to overcome the deficiencies of active probe tools. Specifically, this method entails probe experiments that follow a geometric distribution to meet the following requirements: 1. To enable an explicit trade-off between accuracy and impact on the network. 2. To enable more accurate measurements. 3. To evaluate end-to-end delay, which helps in effective network management To evaluate the capabilities of this methodology experimentally a prototype tool called BADABING, is implemented and tested.
