Abstract

Terrorism in Pakistan has become a major and highly destructive phenomenon in recent years. The annual death toll from terrorist attacks has risen from 164 in 2003 to 3318 in 2009, with a total of 35,000 Pakistanis killed as of 2010. A terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricket team occurred on March 3, 2009, was fired upon by 12 gunmen, near the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan. These were the first attacks on a national sports team since the Munich massacre of Israeli athletes by Palestinian militants in 1972. The aim of the study is to evaluate the causes, and motives behind the terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricket team, by conducting a thorough library study based on articles, news, and investigation reports. The authorities & officials suspected, and investigated upon the involvement of various militant groups and intelligence agencies, including Lashkar-e-Taiba, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and Al-Qaeda; covering the security laps, and suggestions for future security arrangements, and implications. The study indicated the results of the terrorist attacks; as Pakistans complete isolation from international cricket (on home soil) from March 2009 till up-to-date; where all the worlds cricket teams put off scheduled tour to Pakistan due to security concerns after this attack. While on the other hand, it furthermore shattered the chances and future of international investment in Pakistan.
