Case Analysis-ITC

This case discusses the sustainability initiatives of ITC Ltd, a major Indian based conglomerate. The company believed in the Triple bottom line philosophy, according to which the performance of a corporate entity should be judged not only on the basis of its financials, its environmental and social performance should also be taken into account. Thus ITC undertakes some environmental and community initiatives. On the business front, ITC had transformed itself from a tobacco company to a multi- business conglomerate with presence in hotels, paper boards, packaging, agri-exports, packaged foods, confectionaries, branded apparels and information technology (IT) business. On the environmental side, ITC claimed to be the only company in India to have achieved carbon positive and water positive status. Also, its operations release close to zero solid waste to achieve this status the company undertook several initiatives such as forestry and rain water, harvesting programmes. On the social face, the company took it E-choupal initiatives to farmers giving them crop specific information in local languages. It also started rural hyper markets called choupal sagar where farmers could sell their produce by farm inputs and avail of services such as soil testing banking and insurance.
