AWARD TERMS OF REFERENCE

The term "award is a general term often used to refer to scholarships, prizes, fellowships, awards and bursaries.

Scholarships Awarded at the start of the academic year. Based on academic achievement, but can also include other non-academic factors such as leadership, UBC or Faculty involvement, etc. Scholarships appear on the student transcript. Prizes Awarded at the end of the academic year to recognize academics and/or achievement of the academic year that has just ended. Many prizes are course prizes that recognize achievement in a particular course or subject area. Prizes appear on the student transcript. Fellowships Awarded at the start of the academic year. Usually awarded to students enrolled in programs at the Master or Doctoral level; are based on academic achievement and /or research ability, but can also include other non-academic factors such as leadership, UBC or Faculty involvement, etc. Fellowships appear on the student transcript. Academic awards Depending on the award description, can be awarded at the start of the academic year (like scholarships) or at the end of the academic year (like prizes). Based on academic achievement, but can also include other non-academic factors such as leadership, UBC or Faculty involvement, etc. Academic awards appear on the student transcript. Non-Academic awards or Service awards Depending on the award description, can be awarded at the start of the academic year or at the end of the academic year. May recognize achievement or engagement in a range of non-academic fields, including but not limited to, community service, student leadership, volunteerism, international study abroad, service learning, coop, athletic or artistic performance, etc. Non-academic awards are normally adjudicated based on criteria stipulated in the award description and students registration in the current Winter session. Grades or academic averages from the previous Winter session are not normally taken into account. Non-academic awards do not appear on the student transcript. Bursaries Based on financial need. Bursaries do not appear on the student transcript.
