Direct stiffness method for the analysis of indeterminate structures The analysis of indeterminate structures using the direct stiffness method is outlined in the following steps: 1- Identify the structure members and its nodes (or joint). Nodes are interconnection points, supporting points, points of concentrated loads, points of change in moments of inertia, corners, joints, and points of interest where displacements need to be determined. 2- Label the nodes with unknown displacements (matrix [d D ] ). 3- Identify the external loads (matrix [ D ] ). 4- Construct the stiffness matrix of each member [k ] . 5- Construct the structure stiffness matrix [ K ] by superimposing the member stiffness matrices. 6- Obtain the displacement matrix [d D ] using the following equation:
1

[ d D ] =[ K DD ] [ D ]
7- Obtain the unknown nodal force matrix [ R ] using the following equation:

[15-14]

[ R ] =[K RD ][d D ]
