This paper discusses the type of activities that are suitable with reference to adult learning theory which

is widespread among corporate instructional design and training professionals. Speck (1996) notes there are several points of adult learning theory to be considered when professional development activities are designed. One of them is that adults need to participate in small-group activities during the learning to move them beyond understanding to application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Small-group activities provide an opportunity to share, reflect, and generalize their learning experiences. The setting used in the study is of the work place of participants. When conducting the English for Worktm courses the researchers found that adult learners come with a wide range of previous experiences, knowledge and competencies. According to Knowles (2005) one of the key assumptions and principles about adult learners is that individual differences among people increase with age. This diversity is accommodated in the professional development planning as the transfer of learning for adults is not automatic and must be facilitated. Sample activities carried out during the courses will be discussed.
