The SIFT^2 Method of Literary Analysis When exploring how a writer uses literary elements and stylistic technique

to convey meaning or theme, this method allows you to sift through the parts in order to comprehend the whole. SIFT^2 Method

S: Symbolism: examine the title and text for symbolism

What is/are the important symbol(s) for your theme? How does the meaning of the symbol(s) change throughout the novel, and how does the symbol contribute to theme? (The answer(s) to this question must appear on your nal project). Remember, in addition to object, characters can be symbolic as well.

I: Imagery: Identify images and sensory details

Choose 5 important passages that illustrate good examples of imagery. What effects is the author trying to convey with these images? (The answer(s) to this question must appear on your nal project).

F: Figurative Language: analyze gurative language and other devices

Writers use gures of speech such as similes, metaphors, personication, allusion and irony to form images. How do these gures of speech help to convey effect and meaning? (The answer(s) to this question must appear on your nal project)

T: Tone
Analyze the authors word choice in the novel. What language, diction, word choice is used in passages that contribute to your groups theme of the novel. What is the tone of those passages?

T: Theme
Because all literary devices lead to tone and theme, this process will help you perceive what insights about life the author is revealing about each subject. Ask yourself what life-lessons the main characters have learned or what lesson you have learned as a result of your reading. Look for statements in the section by characters or the narrator that comment on life, the world, or human nature, thereby implying theme. Your ndings should be a part of your project.

Lord of the Flies Project Requirements Objective: To use the SIFT^2 method to identify symbolism, imagery, gures of speech, and tone/theme in William Goldings Lord of the Flies Part I: Individual Read the novel for comprehension Complete Theme Analysis ip book for ALL themes Re-read the novel paying attention to your groups assigned theme focus Part II: Group Discuss your thoughts, ideas and SIFT information with group Decide on format for project Analyze the story together to complete project requirements Create a 3-D representation of a symbol for your section Project Requirements The project must include the following: The title of the book prominently displayed The theme prominently displayed Large graphic organizer representing the SIFT elements At least 3 drawings/illustrations on your project in addition to the 3-D symbol. The project can be in the shape of an object and that will meet the requirements, as well. Part III: Presentation Presenters must present the information that is on the project. Your group should read from notes, not from the theme ipbook itself. Each member of the group is responsible for at least one section of the presentation. Present 3-D representation of the symbol and explain its signicance to the novel as a whole. * In a nutshell, this is a group science-fair life project. Projects must be completed and ready to present by________________, so plan accordingly. The entire group needs to equally commit to this project. There will be NO switching of groups. This is an HONORS class and you are expected to adapt to the needs of your group. Everyone must do their part to ensure the success of the project and presentation.
