The Art of Muay Thai
Muay Thai or Thai boxing is a self-defense,
Martial art which originated in Thailand. Muay Thai is the

national sport of Thailand, and is also known as the "Art of

the Eight Limbs" (two hands, two shins, two elbows, two
knees.) In the past, Muay fighters were trained by the king
and senior soldiers for combat on battlefields. After they
retired, they became monks in Buddhism and stayed in
temples. Most people sent their sons to learn everything from
the monks. Muay is an art that is used with or without
weapons in the past to combat on battlefields. (Not enough
weapons for everyone but must fight for survive!!)
One Hundred years ago, there were many
Muay competitions. However, many fighters suffered injuries
and some died from the competitions. So we developed Muay
Thai so that it became a safe sport and acceptable around the
world. So, Muay Thai stopped using the dangerous strike
weapons and improved standards so that it was like fighting
in the ring like western boxing, using boxing gloves instead
of Kaad chuek (Hand wrap) to save the fighters from injury.
Muay has developed and become known as "Professional
Muay Thai".

Nowadays, Professional Muay Thai is very popular

around the world. Many fighters train in Muay Thai for selfdefense. Muay Thai is starting to be recognised as a
competitive sport, and will be shown at the Olympics. Some
fighters train to fight in the ring to be champions, especially
Thai fighters. They usually come from poor families and
need the chance for a better life. Awards for the champion
can change their life. Muay Thai is also popular with
Western fighters who use it in training for use in Mix Martial
Arts, MMA and UFC. Japan has also developed Muay Thai
in Kickboxing and K-1 fighting.
