avant-garde, which by design was one of the most controversial art movements, began in France in 1850.

The term avant-garde itself means, "advanced guard," and military role of the advanced guard, and the role of the avantgarde art movement are much of the same.  The artists of this movement desired not only to challenge traditional art but also society as a whole. The movement desired to pose this challenge in the form of confusing the elite, upsetting commerce, and just plain incensing moral society. These artists aimed at tearing down the status quo.

It is also said that Avant-garde originated in the 19th to 20th century in France and Italy. Its exact origins remain unknown, but art historians place it in this time range. Avantgarde was a fast paced movement, spreading from France to Russia and throughout Europe at lightening fast speed. It is a definitive part of the formation that has created our current American culture.

Throughout the history of art, avant-garde has influenced many different art movements, including abstract expression, conceptual art, cubism, dada, and countless other varieties of artistic movements. Despite a great deal of criticism regarding various avant-garde styles, it is easily the most popular form of art and continues to inspire many new pieces of art.

Surprisingly, Avant-garde made a large impact on more than just the art scene. Avant-garde styles are directly responsible for playing the role of a religion almost, a higher power that guided lost individuals towards hope. The style opened the eyes of many, and allowed political, social and cultural changes to take place on a larger scale.
