Name:MUHAMAD IZWAN BIN MISKAM Matric No:2010272596 Group:ASD3Ay Experiment date: Submit date: Instructor:MOHD HAFIZ BIN YAAKOB

EXPERIMENT 8: REACTION OF AMINES Objective: To investigate the reaction of 1 amines (1-aminobutane and phenylamine) Pre lab assignment: amines are classified as primary, secondary or tertiary amines depend on the number of alkyl or aromatic group attached to the nitrogen atom. The general formula for this compound is R---NH2 , where R is alkyl or aromatic groups. The primary amines CH3CH2---NH2, named as ethylamine.the secondary amines attached with two alkyl or aromatic group for example N-ethylethanamine (diethylamine) and tertiary amines attached with three alkyl or aromatic group N-ethyl-N-methylethanamine. a. Primary amines R---NH2 b. Secondary amines R

R---N---H c. Tertiary amines R R---N---R

An aromatic amine has the nitrogen ato attached to the aromatic ringthe simplest aromatic amine is called phenylamine.the common name is aniline.

Chemicals: Aminobutane(butylamine) Phenylamine(aniline) Acetic acid Acetic anhydride Dilute NaOH Dilute HCL Phenolpthalein indicator Bromothymol blue indicator Benzoyl chloride Apparatus: 10 test tubes Blue and red litmus paper 1 250 ml beaker 2 100 ml beaker Blue litmus paper Red litmus paper Hot plate Procedures:a)oxidation I. Tollens test

Preparation of tollents reagent

Add 1 drop dilute NaOH to 1ml of dilute AgNO3 solution.dissolve the grey solid of AG2Omsolid formed by additing dilute NH4OH solution until a clear solution is obtained.divide this solution in two test tubes: 1. 5 drops of ethanol was added in one of the test tube containing tollents reagent and the mixture was heated in a water bath for 10 minute. 2. 5 drops of propanone in the other test tube and carry on the same procedure as above.the result was compared. II. Fehling test 1. 1 ml of Fehling A solution ,1 ml of Fehling B solution and 5 drops of ethanal was added in a test tube.the mixture was heated in a water bath.colour change and precipitate was recorded. 2. The test was repeated waith 5 drops of propanone. III. Reaction with oxidizing agent(acidified KMnO4) 1. 2 ml of dilute H2SO4 was added into 1ml of KMnO4(acidifying the solution),then the 1ml of ethanol solution was added. The mixture was shacked well and color change in room temperature and after heating was recorded. 2. The procedure above was used with replace of ethanol with propanone. b)reaction on carbonyl group I. Condensation 1. 1ml of methanol and 1ml of ethanol was added in a test tube, then the 2ml of 2,4DNPH reagent.the mixture was shacked well and observed, and the mixture was heated in a water bath for few minute.the mixture cooled and observed. 2. The procedure was repeated in replace ethanol with propanone. c) reaction on the methyl ketones I. Iodoform test 1. The 1ml ethanol was added with iodine solution and aqueous solution of NaOH drop by drop until the orange color disappear.the mixture was heated and observed. 2. The procedure was repeated with replace of ethanol with propanone.

Result: test observations ethanal a.oxidation Light yellow turns color I. Tollens test less(silver precipitate) II. Fehlings test Dark blue turns dark green(cloudy) III. Reaction with Light brown turn acidified KMnO4 clear(brown precipitate) b)condensation with 2,4- Yellow turns pale yellow DNPH c)iodoform test(reaction Colorless turns light on methyl ketones) yellowish

propanone Colorless turns light grey Dark blue unchanged Purple turn brick red Yellow turn dark yellow Colourless turns cloudy

Discussion: Conclusion: Reference: Question:

1. Compound A, C8H8O gives orange precipitate with 2,4-pnph and react with Fehlings reagent to form brick-red precipitate.A also reacts with acidified potassium dichromate(VII) solution to form B,a carboxculic acid. From, the observation of experiment above, identify A and B.write equation involved. 2. What is your observation if you differentiate 2-butanone and 2-methylbutanal using Tollents reagent and 2,3-DNPH.write the equations involved.
