react [verb]: to show a response or a reaction to


something. Example: When she is bitten by a mosquito, she

reacts by slapping herself.

distance [noun]: the amount of space between two


places. Example: The distance between Chiangmai and
Bangkok is about 700 kilometers.

flow [verb]: (especially of liquids, gases or electricity)


to move in one direction, especially continuously and
easily. Example: Many short rivers flow into the Pacific
Ocean.

poison [noun]: a substance that can make people or


animals ill or kills them if they eat or drink it or it gets
into the body by other means.

turn off [verb]: to press a switch so that a machine or a


piece of electrical equipment stops working, or to stop
the flow or supply of something, e.g. water, electricity.

harmful [adjective]: causing pain, damage, or injury.

pollution and damages plants, etc.

Present Simple Tense

Subject + Verb 1

The Present Simple tense is also called the Simple Present tense. The simple present tense
expresses an action that takes place in the present once, never or several times. It is also used
for actions that take place one after another and for actions that are set by a timetable or
schedule. The simple present also expresses facts in the present.
Example:

-Cars burn petrol.


-The problem starts here.
-Power stations burn coal.
The Passive voice
The Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not always
known, who or what is performing the action.

The Passive voice Simple present tense

Subject + is/am/are + Verb 3

Example:

-The pollution is gathered in clouds when it reacts with the oxygen and water in the
atmosphere it becomes acid.
- The pollution is gathered in clouds.
