Task 1: Genre of To Kill A Mockingbird novel One of the genres identified for To Kill A Mockingbird is coming-of-age.

The main characteristic of coming-of age novels is the telling of realistic stories that also show the good and main characters growing up. An individual changes from an immature and self-absorbed to a mature being with more concern and understanding towards others. This is very obvious in the novel where the main characters Scout and Jem grew up and understood racism and moral values in the real world. This was especially when they face threats and challenges during the court trial of their father, Atticus who defends a black. This is against the norm of the white community. They soon learned about discrimination and prejudice among the blacks and whites when the result of the trial was announced. Furthermore, To Kill A Mockingbird is a realistic fiction as it is based on the Scottsboro Trial that took place in 1931. The case is in fact very similar to the one found in the novel. The Scottsboro trial is about 9 black men who were charged of raping 2 white women.
