a) Development of ship recycling demand forecast software for a particular ship type b) Development of layout of ship recycling yards based on disassembly concept

Nature of the problem proposed for Investigation: Most ships have a lifespan of a few decades before it becomes uneconomical to repair or refit. Ship recycling can be considered as the final phase in the life cycle of a ship and is the best means to dispose off an obsolete ship. Ship breaking allows materials from the ship to be reused. Ship breaking can be carried out using different methods in a wide variety of facilities. Ship recycling demand in general means the number of vessels ready to be dismantled during a specific period of time. The ship recycling industry heavily depends on the number and type of ships that will be ready for recycling. This work will focus on the development of a demand forecasting software for ship recycling and the development of layout of ship recycling yards based on disassembly concept.

Source Material: 1.Literature from journals 2.Text books 3.Information to be collected from ship breaking yards in India Items under serial numbers 1 & 2 are available on internet and in the library of Department of Ship Technology.

Methodology : Data of vessels which were disposed off for the last 10 years worldwide will be collected and an analytical study of the various types of vessels versus the parameters that are likely to be involved in the ship recycling including cost aspects, regulatory aspects etc will be done. Various demand forecasting methods will be considered in order to assess their suitability for ship breaking demand forecast and the most suitable computer based method will be proposed along with the necessary parameters to be considered. The various ship breaking yards presently in operation will be studied viz-a-viz the different method of recycling of the ships in various countries and an ideal layout, which is also environmental friendly, will be proposed based on disassembly concept.

Time Schedule: Duration 0-12 months 13-24 months 25-35 months 36-40 months Activity Literature review and formulation of problem Development of software for demand forecasting Development of layout of ship recycling yards Documentation and preparation of thesis
