First Nations Flip Chart

You are going to get into a Discussion Group made up of 5 people. Each person is going to select a First Nations group to individually research from one of the 5 regions of Canada (see below). Your flip chart must examine the following aspects of culture: Shelter (Tab #1) What they live in and how it is made. Diet (Tab #2) Their made sources of food and how they acquire it. Language (Tab #3) That language they speak, and how many groups speak it Art (Tab #4) This can be visual arts and/or performing arts Government (Tab #5) The person in charge and how decisions were made.

Regional Groups 1. Pacific Coast Haida Salish Squamish

2. Plains or Woodlands Cree (Plains or Woodland) Blackfoot Sioux Ojibwa

3. Great Lakes Huron Iroquois

4. Atlantic Coast Mi'kmaq Beothuk

5. The North Inuit Dene (A.K.A. Chipewyan)

What Each Entry Should Have Each entry or tab should have the following: A paragraph of information about the topic (shelter, diet, art, etc.) A picture or image to accompany the information Neat printing, proper spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Proper grammar

What Will Be Done With the Finished Product Each person in the Discussion Group has a very important role. When we are done the research and construction of the flip charts, we will be having a class in which each person from the Discussion Group is going present their findings on their First Nations group. This will be during a class on the cultural diversity of First Nations people and why certain terms are better than others for describing the First Nations people. You MUST be done your flip chart on the day that it is due. Otherwise, you cheat your Discussion Group and sabotage everyones learning. Once the discussion class is over, you will hand in the flip chart for grading. Overall Procedure Step #1 Get into Discussion Groups and distribute topics. Step #2 You will get two periods to research your First Nations group, and one period to create your flip chart. Step #3 Meet back in Discussion Group for presentation of findings, and a discussion around the idea of using terms to describe people groups.
