    Gas-Insulated Transmission System (GIL) is an alternative to overhead power transmission lines that can be used where environmental or construction constraints prevent traditional overhead lines.     ABSTRACT
    Gas Insulated Transmission lines (GIL) are a means of bulk electric power transmission at high and extra high voltage. In places where construction or environmental constraints prevent the installation of overhead power transmission lines, gas-insulated lines(GILs) are an economical and ecological alternative. Gas- insulated lines are laid in tunnels, in some case above ground but for the most part in ground. Due to their unique properties GIL systems have become well established in all parts of the world, to solve difficult transmission tasks in complex routings. GIL consists of tubular aluminium conductors encased in a metallic tube that is filled with a mixture of Nitrogen (N2 ) and Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6 ) gases for electrical insulation. To meet up-to-date environmental and technical aspects, GIL are filled with this insulating gas mixture.The conductor rests on cast resin insulators, which centre it within the outer enclosure. Apart from that other benefits during construction and operation the GIL design offers also in the event of an internal failure the ability to maintain the arc and its product completely within the enclosure, thus delivering a maximum of safety and reliability during operation which qualifies the system for high and engineering solutions. Benefits of GIL are low losses, no electromagnetic compensation, High safety, High reliability, Maintenance free design. GIL can be used in all common laying arrangements, which makes them suitable for numerous applications. Be it feeder connections in power plants, transmission systems in tunnels beneath cities or directly buried for overland transmission systems, where overhead lines cannot be used for specific reasons.GIL can be used horizontally, vertically or in any inclined arrangement. In this case the transmission losses are upto 70 percent lower than those of overhead lines, they produce less warming in their surroundings, they cost much less to operate and their simple maintenance free design ensures a long life.
