System Functions
The Palladio platesetter is one component in your imaging system. Imaging systems can include:

Host computers running PostScript language applications Apogee PrintDrive and/or a raster image processor (RIP) that receives jobs from the host computer, assembles them, and sends them to the platesetter An online processor
Imaging systems that support Palladio platesetters can be made up of many different combinations of hardware and software. To use your platesetter most effectively, make sure you understand all the components of your unique system.
Platesetter Features
The Palladio platesetter is a flatbed PostScript laser platesetter that uses violet laser diode technology to image violet-sensitive silver aluminum plates. Plates can be automatically or manually fed, and are output to an online processor. The basic imaging specifications are:

One supply cassette and one trolley are provided with each platesetter. Additional cassettes and trolleys may be purchased separately. Plates are automatically moved from a nearly vertical cassette onto a horizontal exposure table. Vacuum is applied to keep the plate positioned. Optional punch units create registration holes and/or press notches. The table moves the plate into the laser area for exposure. The exposed plate exits the unit directly into an online processor.

Menu button
The display window shows operation status and error messages. As you enter parameter setups, your entries appear here. The display consists of , five categories: Menu, Command, Status, Error Messages, and Others. The online light indicates online/offline status, and the loaded light indicates when a plate is ready for imaging. Use the stop button to stop plate exposure or to transfer operations; it does not shut down power to the Palladio. Use the menu button to switch between online and offline, and to return to the previous display. Use the move-left and move-right buttons to move the cursor within each menu, to move between menus, and to change parameters. Use the enter button to set the respective parameters and to execute commands. Also use it to reset an error message.

Laser Information
The Palladio Platesetter is a Class I product. The maximum accessible radiation level during operation and maintenance is less than Class I limits. This means that you are not exposed to any hazardous laser radiation during operation and maintenance because of protective doors and interlocks. This product complies with the Code of Federal Regulations as well as international standards. Inside Palladio is a Class III B Laser. This device emits radiation that is considered hazardous. You are not exposed to this level of radiation as long as the protective doors remain in place and interlocks are not tampered with.

Do not use controls or adjustments other than those specified in the user documentation that comes with the Palladio. Do not perform procedures other than those specified in the user documentation that comes with the Palladio. Do not attempt to service this unit. Never remove the protective doors or enclosures, especially during operation or maintenance, except as instructed in the user documentation that comes with the Palladio.

Never tamper with the safety interlocks. Removing the doors or tampering with the interlocks may expose you to laser radiation that is considered hazardous according to the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 1040.10, and international standards. Make sure the protective doors are installed correctly as instructed in the user documentation.
Do not use the Palladio in any area near water. Keep all liquids off the top of the Palladio to prevent spills. Allowing water or other liquids to enter the Palladio could cause electrical shock and damage to the unit. Vent openings on the enclosure are provided for cooling. To ensure reliable operation, these openings must not be blocked. Install the Palladio following the clearance guidelines in the installation instructions. Do not place objects between the Palladio and the wall. Do not operate the Palladio when there are gas vapors in the air that may ignite or explode. To avoid cuts, always wear non-slip protective gloves when handling plates.

Make sure that the Palladio is connected to the correct power source that includes a readily accessible disconnect device in the fixed wiring. This information is indicated on the model tag. Never allow objects of any kind to penetrate the product through the enclosure vents. Objects may come in contact with hazardous voltage, which could create a risk of fire or electric shock. Do not attempt to service the Palladio yourself, except as specifically explained in the user documentation that comes with it. Opening and removing doors may expose you to dangerous voltage and radiation hazards. Turn off the Palladio when performing any maintenance procedure. Turn off the Palladio in the event of a power failure. Turn off and unplug the Palladio from the wall outlet and place a service call under these conditions: The power cord is damaged or frayed. Liquid has been spilled into the product. The product has been physically damaged. The Palladio does not operate normally, even when you follow the operating instructions.

The sound level at the operators position (with a processor) is as follows: a maximum of 69dB RMS and 80 dB peak (A weighted, SPL).

CAUTION: To avoid fogging plates that are in the cassette or being exposed: Do not open the plate supply doors except to replace cassettes or correct a jam. Do not open any doors or covers while a plate is loading, being imaged, or unloading. Do not open the cassette shutter unless you are in a safelight environment.

Note: Before you begin, make sure the processor is powered on and in an active state.
Follow these steps to power up the Palladio platesetter: 1. 2. Make sure the Palladio main unit and the host computer (Apogee PrintDrive and/or RIP) are powered off. Confirm that all the Palladio doors and covers are closed, and turn on the Palladio power supply by setting the power switch to the I position. Initialization of the Palladio starts, and INITIALIZING appears on the display window of the operation panel. After a few moments, the operation panel display changes from INITIALIZING to CHANGE CAS-COND to indicate offline mode. If an error is detected during initialization, an error message appears in the display. (See Chapter 8, Troubleshooting, for more information.) After the initialization is complete, power up the host computer. Press the menu button on the Palladio to put the Palladio online. The online light lights and the display window shows the cassette number, the press number, plate size, and number of plates remaining in the cassette.:

If the Palladio is online, press the menu button to put it offline. When CHANGE CAS-COND appears in the display window, indicating that the Palladio is offline, use the move-left and moveright buttons to move the cursor to CHANGE. Press the enter button. The CHANGE Cas. EXEC menu item appears.

Each time you remove the trolley from the main unit, remove the interleafs that have collected in the collection box on the back side of the trolley.
CAUTION: To prevent misfeeds, make sure the interleaf collection box doesnt become too full.

Cassette ID Number
A cassette number identification label may be attached to each cassette. The Palladio reads this label, recognizes which cassette is loaded, and performs operations according to the various parameters you have set for the plates loaded into that cassette. See Chapter 4, Entering Settings, for more detailed information. The cassette information includes plate parameters such as size, type (laser intensity and positive/negative), and quantity remaining in the cassette. The cassette information also includes press parameters such as grip, punch, edge, offset, and image centering information. If you load a cassette into the Palladio without this label, the Set Plate Cassette message appears on the display, and the Palladio will not operate until you enter settings. See Chapter 4, Entering Settings, for more information about these multi-use cassettes.

Make sure that the fixing guide on the left of the cassette is at the Darkroom position.

The vertical positioning guide is actually a moveable horizontal plate holder that you attach in the cassette according to the vertical measurement of your plate. Tabs on the guide fit into slots in the cassette. The guide is marked at intervals with lists of numbers that help you align the tabs with the slots:

There is a black band above each list of numbers, and there is a vertical scale attached to the back of the cassette.

The following photograph illustrates the proper positioning for a 620 mm plate. The last digits in the plate measurement 620 are 20. Find the list on the guide that has 20 in it. With the black band of that list just to the left of the numbers printed on the vertical scale, place the top edge of the vertical positioning guide at the 620 mark on the vertical scale. The tabs at the back of the guide and the slots in the cassette match up when the guide is in this position.

Loosen the two fixing screws on the horizontal positioning guide and slide the guide out of the way as far as it will go to the right.

Place the bundle of plates into the cassette, emulsion side out, resting the lower edge of the bundle against the vertical positioning guide, and the left edge of the bundle against the fixing guide on the left side of the cassette. Note: Only one size plate can be loaded into the cassette at one time. The cassette will hold up to 50 plates.

CAUTION: Use correct lifting techniques when loading plates. It is sometimes helpful if two people work together. Also wear non-slip protective gloves to protect hands from cuts.

10. With the fixing screws still loosened, slide the horizontal positioning guide back to the left until it touches the right edge of the bundle, but does not exert any pressure. Tighten the fixing screws.

CAUTION: Be careful not to bend the retainer springs. If they become bent, malfunctions may occur during transport.

Set the lock levers onto the fixing pins on both sides of the trolley. Using the handles, hold the picker unit in its up position and release the hooks from the fixing bracket. Gently lower the picker unit into place. Set the lock levers on both sides of the picker unit. Note: Refer to Removing the Cassette Trolley in this chapter for illustrations of these parts. Close the plate supply unit front doors (doors A). Note: The message Shut the door (A) appears in the message window. Press the enter button. Waiting appears briefly, and then CHANGE CAS-COND appears, indicating that the Palladio is offline. Press the menu button to put the Palladio online. Palladio will read the cassette ID number and will operate using the information you

have set for that cassette. See Chapter 4, Entering Settings, for more information.
Note: If you replace the cassette without putting the Palladio offline and navigating to the CHANGE prompt (as described in Removing the Cassette Trolley), the CHANGE CAS-COND screen appears when you close the plate supply unit doors. If this screen appears, press the move-right button to display the CASSETTE PRESS screen, move the cursor to CASSETTE, and enter the plate information.
Executing Output
You are now ready to send jobs from the host computer.
CAUTION: Do not open doors and covers unless there is a special reason or emergency. Opening the door on the plate supply unit can fog plates that are being imaged or are still in the cassette. Opening a door or cover while a plate is being transferred (when the display window displays Loading, Recording, or Unloading) can cause problems in the plate that is being imaged.
CAUTION: Do not press the stop button while the Palladio is in operation, except in emergencies. Pressing the stop button cancels the next operation, but does not shut power off to the Palladio.

CAUTION: Use care when handling plates. Bends, scratches, and fingerprints can cause jams and poor image quality.

Close the main unit top door (door C). SHUT DOOR displays in the message window. Press the enter button. Press the menu button to put the Palladio online. Send jobs to the Palladio from PrintDrive or the RIP. LOADING... RECORDING... UNLOADING appear in the display window as a plate is loaded, imaged, and unloaded to the processor.
10. If there are more jobs in the buffer, SET PLATE appears again in the display window as soon as a plate is unloaded into the processor. 11. Load another plate. Press the enter button and the Palladio images the next job in the queue. 12. When no jobs remain in the queue the Palladio returns to the online/ manual mode. Example: the H1:P4 400 x 510 00 menu appears. 13. To reset the Palladio to automatic load, refer to Setting the Loading Method in Chapter 4, Entering Settings.

Introduction
The operator control panel (OCP) consists of an LCD display window, status lights, and command buttons. Using the operation panel, you enter plate and press parameters, check status, receive error messages and other messages, and send commands to the Palladio.

The display window This window displays operation status and error messages. For details see Understanding the Display Window in this chapter. Online light This light is illuminated during communication with the host computer or while communication is possible (online mode).

Loaded light This light is illuminated when a plate is in position and ready for exposure. Stop button Use this button to stop plate exposure or transfer operations. Use of this button does not shut down power to the Palladio. Menu button Use the menu button to switch between online and offline. Also use it to return to the previous display. Move-left and move-right buttons Use the move-left and move-right buttons to move the cursor within each menu, to move between menus, and to change parameters. Enter button Use the enter button to set parameters and to execute commands. Also use it to reset an error message.

Status display Displays messages indicating the current Palladio online/offline status. Also displays an operational request when the Palladio is in operation.
Error messages display Displays error messages when the current Palladio status is not normal, and after an error occurs during operation. A buzzer may also sound (see Chapter 6, Preference Settings). During the display of an error message, the Palladio will not operate. For information on clearing errors, see Chapter 8, Troubleshooting. To reset Palladio after you clear an error, press the enter button.
Operation Menu display The operation menu consists of two tiers. This is the menu you use to enter parameters for the plates and presses you use, as well as to set other parameters. See the Menu Tiers Chart in this chapter. This chart outlines the options in this menu. Refer to it as you read through this chapter and Chapter 4, Entering Settings. From the menu item that enables you to make a setting, press the enter button to move to the menu item that gives you choices. If the menu item requires a selection setting, use the move-left and move-right buttons to move the cursor to the choice you want. If the menu item requires a numerical setting, use the move-left and move-right buttons to change the values shown in the window. The same pattern of five strips is exposed seven times each with a different level of laser intensity: the current setting appears in the middle, three settings in the positive direction appear on one side, and three in the negative direction appear on the other side. When you select the fine adjustment, the laser intensity varies in increments of 2, from -6 to +6. Use the following procedure to set up and run an exposure test. 1. Following is an example of the exposure pattern in the 45 50% dots strip. In an optimum exposure, like this one, the white and black squares are the same size. If the white squares are smaller, under exposure is indicated. If the black squares are smaller, over exposure is indicated.
If the exposure patterns are underexposed, evaluate the same strips in the next groups of strips in the positive direction. If the exposure patterns are over exposed, evaluate the same strips in the next groups of strips in the negative direction. Set the laser intensity to the value that corresponds to the group of strips that contains the best exposure.

It shows the optimum exposure in the primary scanning direction. The lines and spaces in the primary scanning direction should be the same widths as the lines and spaces in the secondary scanning direction. Use the following procedure to enable or disable buzzer operation. 1. Use the menu button to put the Palladio offline. The following menu appears: CHANGE CAS-COND 2. 3. 4. Press the move-right button until the SCSI VER BUZZER menu appears. Move the cursor to BUZZER and press the enter button. Example: the BUZZER: ON screen displays. Using the move-left and move-right buttons, toggle between ON and OFF, and press the enter button to save your selection.

Plate supply unit front door is open. Close the door. Plate supply unit is detached from the main unit. Connect the plate supply unit. Main unit top door is open. Close the top door. Plate discharge unit door is open. Close the door. Replace the cassette. The cassette is not set. Set the cassette. The cassette shutter could not be closed. Check if a plate is caught in the cassette shutter, and remove it if necessary. If no plate is caught, contact your local service representative. The cassette shutter could not be opened. Contact your local service representative. There are no more plates. Fill the cassette. Load the plate. Remove the interleaf from the plate supply unit. Remove the plate from the plate supply unit.
