STRONG-BOLT CHANGES HAVE ARRIVED

IN THE ANCHOR INDUSTRY!

C
hanges to the 2003 International Building Code (I.B.C.) have
created the need for post-installed anchors that perform in
cracked concrete. These anchors are designed to function in
the event that the concrete base material cracks right through the

WEDGE ANCHOR location where the anchor is installed. There are significant
differences in the anchor design and performance characteristics.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

In certain applications existing post-installed
anchor types such as wedge, sleeve and drop-
in anchors will no longer be suitable. While it is
hard to say exactly which applications will be
affected, generally speaking, wherever an
anchor is installed into a concrete member that
encounters tensile forces, a new cracked
concrete anchor must be used. It is expected
that engineers will switch many of their
specifications to this type of anchor in order to
avoid confusion between suitable and
unsuitable applications.

WHEN WILL THIS CHANGE OCCUR?

The simple answer is whenever local building departments begin adopting
the 2003 I.B.C. Once this happens, engineers will be required to switch to
the new anchors when designing anchorages. Historically it takes 1-2
years for building departments to begin implementing a new code, we
should see more cracked concrete anchors specified in the near future.
Many Building Officials and engineers are already aware of the upcoming
changes and are preparing for the shift to the new anchor types.

STAYING AT THE FOREFRONT

Through involvement with industry
groups and code agencies Simpson
Strong-Tie has been aware of this
impending change for some time.
In an effort to continue to provide

T
he Strong-Bolt™ is Simpson’s first product for cracked concrete anchorage. It looks and installs
like a standard wedge anchor, yet performs very differently. These performance differences allow
it to perform in cracked concrete and meet the requirements of the new building code.
