VOLUNTARYANDMANDATORYSTANDARDS
Generally,standardsthathavebeenestablishedbySIRIM (MalaysianStandards)isvoluntary. Astandardwillbeclassedasmandatorywhenitisadoptedby regulatorsintoActorRules. MinistryOfTransportrecognizetheUnitedNationsEconomic CommissionforEurope(UNECE)RegulationsandMalaysian Standardsasthecomplianceofautomotiveproductstobe usedaspartofthevehicle.

BACKGROUND
MalaysiaaccededtoWorldForumforHarmonizationof VehicleRegulations(WP29)since4th April2006. Throughthisaccession,Malaysiasignedthe1958agreement whichimposingthecertificationmechanismofUNECE Regulations. ThepurposeoftheimplementationofUNECERegulationsare inclusiveofinternationaltradefacilitation,ensurethesafety andenvironmentprotection.WhileMalaysianStandardswill supporttheimplementationprocess.
