Magnitude vs. Intensity Procedure 1.

You will be given a zip code map and a copy of the Modified Mercalli Scale. You will then be provided an earthquake experience paragraph for a zipcode found on the zip code map. 2. Individually determine what you think the intensity at your zip code is using the Modified Mercalli Scale. 3. When asked, read your earthquake experience paragraph to the class. The rest of the class will then determine what they think the intensity is. 4. You will follow this procedure based on the earthquake experience paragraph read that represent all of the zip codes on the map. 5. Color the key at the bottom of the zip code map and, based on this key, color in each zip code according to the intensity you have assigned each zip code based on your classmates earthquake experience paragraphs. 6. You will then be shown the actual intensity map for the earthquake. Answer the Analysis and Conclusion questions below using complete sentences. Analysis 1. What do you think the location of the epicenter was? Explain. 2. Were there any patterns when correlating zip code and intensity? Explain. Conclusion 1. Contrast magnitude and intensity. 2. What did you study in this activity? How do you know this? 3. Write two sentences describing how similar or different your map was than the actual. 4. Write three sentences explaining why your map was similar or different from the actual.
