First Rib - the shortest, flattest and most curvaceous of the ribs - runs forward at an angle of 60 degrees to the

spine and forms part of the boundary of the thoracic inlet (the first thoracic vertebra and the manubrium sternae form the remainder of the boundary) - the tubercle articulates with the transverse process of T1 - the subpleural membrane is a tough sheet of fibrous tissue which spreads over the cervical pleura and attaches to the transverse process of C7.
