I think that Ataturk was a hero who greatly contributed to Turkeys prosperity and development.

Not only did Mustafa Kemal abolish the Sultanate and proclaimed a Republic, but he also abolished the Caliph and began an era of reforms. Ataturk strongly believed that Turkey's population must be modernized both in its looks and its minds (Ataturk documentary). This is why he introduced the western hat instead of the traditional hats; banned religious clothes for the ordinary population, and closed down religious brotherhoods (Ataturk documentary); and adopted new Turkish alphabet (Biography of Atatrk). Mustafa Kemal also started a campaign that aimed to emancipate women and adopted the Swiss civil code, which prevented polygamy and gave women equal rights in marriage. Subsequently, women got a right to vote and to be elected in the parliament. It was due to these and many other Ataturks reforms, that Turkey started to develop at high rates and the countrys standards of living rose. Someone might say that Ataturk was a despot and a dictator, because he used his power to change the whole country and did not tolerate opposition. In particular, Islamic fundamentalists would argue that Ataturks cruelty toward and sadistic treatment of Muslims makes the Father Turk a despot and a dictator. It is true that Mustafa Kemal drastically changed and disrupted ages-old Islamic traditions, but he did so in order for Turkey, his beloved motherland, to prosper.
