Thinking green and eco-cities urban planning are 21st century visionaries, you say?
Well, thats not exactly what Yemeni ancient cities are suggesting. For over three
millennia, the Yemenis have been building their beautiful tower houses out of the
earth below them. The inspiring architectural heritage of Yemen boasts the nations
exceptional capacity of intellect. The distinctive and uniquely efcient engineering
adaptations that made Yemen one of the ancient world>s most renowned irrigated
societies for its locally-adapted system of water management is only one virtue of
what seems to be a comprehensive strategy of eco-design and adaptive management
of ecosystems. That is clearly demonstrated, once again, in the engineering concepts
related to ancient mud built cities.

An encyclopedias worth of coral lies just off

the shores of Two Moons Tpirosm Resort.
Al-Zubairy provides visitors with snorkeling
equipment, and coaches the uninitiated in
how th breathe through the tube.
Don>t panic, he said to one of his beginners,
who seemed concerned about the fact that the
mask blocked her nose.
Just breathe through your mouth.
Forget you have a nose.
Let>s just sit here and breathe.
After a few minutes of calming breathing,
al-Zubairy led the way into the water and
through its hidden fairy land Tiny silver
sh darted in and out of the leaves of large,
cabbage-shaped corals.
Beside these lay large lumps of coral folded
in on themselves sn that they resembled

11

nothing more than the exposed cerebella of a

sea monster.
Spiky sea urchins abounded (shoes
recommended for swimmers in this area!), as
did porcupine-like coral.
Branch coral reached purple tipped ngers up
toward the sky.
Arainbow-colored sh swam by, apping
tiny wings, and an enormous mussel(which
al-Zubairy calls murder shells opened and
closed its rippled blue lips.
Aschool of the long, cylindrical sh the kind
that had been served for dinner the night
before swam by, darting quickly away as if
suspecting the fate of their missing brethren.
A cloud of at, inky black sh dashed
past, as though they were all late for an
engagement.

After the over stimulation of the reefs, the

beaches provided a peaceful interlude.
Lunch was another sumptuous seafood and
salad extravaganza.
Afterwards, engorged guests went back to
lounging, swimming, writing, reading, or
walking.
Al-zubairy also offered motorbike tours
around the island, along dusty roads to
Kamaran city, the islands freshwater wells,
and the ruins of an ancient Persian palace.
That night, after dinner, al-Zubairy arranged
a party on the beach, with music and dancing
and home-baked cake, to celebrate the
birthday of one of his visitors.
Fireworks were set off into the sky.
But perhaps the most magical offering was
yet to come.

Fishing boats arrived close to midnight, to

transport the islands visitors to the mouth of
a cluster of mangrove trees some half an hour
away.
As the motorboats sped across the dark
water, passengers playfully threw cans and
bottles of drinks back and forth to each other,
laughing and joking.
And then a new length of sand arose from
the sea ahead of the boats, which anchored
some ways off shore.
Men and women tumbled out of them into the
sea with whoops of joy.
The water was bath-warm, one of the islands
moons a fuzzy white above.
Guests played like mermen and women, until
called back to the boats, for a wet and sticky
ride back to Kamaran.

The night trip was so special, said Piederse,

because of the people, and the surroundings
the Dali-esque surroundings.
I could have easily seen a melting clock in
those surroundings.
Anne Leewis,22 of the Netherlands, also said
the night swim was a highlight of her trip.
But the whole Kamaran experience was
unique, she added.

What to pack for kamaran:

Sunscreen
Theres very little shade of Kamaran, and
even when playing in the water, guests will
want to slather themselves with sunscreen to
keep from getting severe burns.
Insect repellent
Some of the Tihama huts have mosquito nets,

but not all, and the bugs can be erce. Very

light, cotton clothing No matter what time
of year you go, Kamaran tends to be hot and
steamy, so pack loose-tting comfortable
summer clothing.

Towels
Chances are good that much of your timt at
Kamaran will be spent under water.
Passport and travel permits Its a good idea to
carry identication while traveling anywhere.
Security ofcials on the mainland may ask to
see identication boats for the island.
Swimsuit
No other article of clothing will get quite as
much wear on Kamaran.
Snorkeling equipment .

10

Travelers who settle themselves at the tip of

the sandy tongue that lolls from its northern
end just as the full moon takes to the sky, will
see its reection in the water on either side
of them.
Welcome to Kamaran, or Two Moons, island,
the largest Yemen-controlled island in the
Red Sea.
Theres another reason this hot, sunny stretch
of sand is said to have two moons.
For two weeks a month, it is possible to see
the moon shining on one side of the sky and
the sun on the other, at the same time.

16

The lunar anomalies are but two of the tiny

islands many charms.
The 42-square-mile island is surrounded
on three sides by extraordinary coral reefs,
its sands slope down to serene white-sand
beaches, and its an ideal launching pad for
boat trips around the Red Sea.
But one of Kamarans chief attractions is
man-made: the Two Moons Tourism Resort.
At its heart is a large, airy circular stone
building, with a palm and acacia thatched
roof.
Here, guests can relax before and after

digging into the vast and spectacular buffet

meals prepared by owner Mohammed
al-Zubairy and his staff.
Guests sleep in traditional Tihama huts
clustered around the main building.
Colorful cloths utter from the doors and
windows of the huts, allowing breezes to ow
over sleepers.
Visitors can choose from king-sized beds
draped with mosquito netting, and single
woven rope cots, four per hut.
Al-Zubairy, originally from Mahweet,
opened the resort in 1997, after President Ali

Abdullah Saleh gave him the land to open the

island to tourism investment I like the sea,
said al-Zubairy. I grew up close to the sea. I
wanted to protect the environment in some
way, in my way.
In crafting his island camp, al-Zubairy took
care to use natural materials, and to follow
the traditional building methods of the
Tihama region, the western coastal area of
Yemen.
The resort was an investment project, so it
was opened to make money _at least enough
to keep it in the black, said al-Zubairy.

But he wont do that at the expense of the

environment.
I just want to earn enough to cover my costs,
he said.
Its evident to anyone who has ever been
to Kamaran that there is another reason
al-Zubairy is so passionate about his island
retreat: He likes people.
When three shing boatloads of guests
arrived one recent evening, al-Zubairy was at
the boat dock to greet them.
He handed each traveler up onto the beach
individually, greeting those he knew by

name, and welcoming newcomers.

It was a dark, starry night.
From the sea, it had been impossible to make
out even the outline of the island until the
boats rubbed up against its shore.
The 20-minute trip across the sea had been
enchanting, the tips of the waves glowing
white in the moonlight.
Upon debarking on Kamaran, guests
scattered to choose their Tihama huts and
to run to the beach for a quick swim before
dinner.
A-Zubairy played the perfect host, making
sure those who wanted to relax in the main
lodge before dinner were furnished with
drinks before directing newcomers to the
beach and shower.
Dinner was, naturallu enough, sh plucked
from the sea just a few hours earlier.
Several salads, mashed potatoes with feta
cheese, roti, and rice accompanied the tender,
aky roasted sh.
Pitchers of fresh mango juice were brought
out for dessert.
After eating, guests lounged outside under
the stars, talking and relaxing until the
exhaustion of their long journey from Sanaa
to the island caught up with them, and one by
one, they retreated to their huts.
By the time the rst guest awoke, coffee and
tea were waiting in the main room, along
with plates of thin pancakes, cheese, bread,
honey, jam, and mango juice.
After breakfast, several guests took a boat
ride to another nearby island, in the hopes of
doing some diving along the way.
The island, they said, was beautiful, and the
swimming quite lovely.
It was really nice and relaxing, said Xander
Piederse, 33 a Dutch visitor.
White beach, blue water. We all got
sunburned, but it was worth it.
Sand as white as snow., added his friend
Florens Hart de Ruyter, 28.
However, one would-be diver described the
diving equipment as pre-Islamic.
Travelers wishing to do serious diving may
want to think about bringing their own
equipment.
The rest of the group spent the morning
snorkeling through the reefs, swimming,
reading, or simply lounging around and
engaging in idle conversation.

loads of grass on their heads to feed the

cattle.
Then, we arrived at Al Baimy, the place
where the valley ends and the path forks
towards the two higher villages, Al Jedeida
to the East and Regah, at the top of Jebel
Bura proper, to the West. The view to the
South, an incredibly deep abyss ending in
another narrow valley and giving way to
more and more rugged scenery, all of it
similarly dressed in terraces and qat and
coffee groves, completed the whole range
known as Haraz.
The path from there to the top of Jebel Bura
was even more strenuous, and I was told
that, not so long ago, parts of it had to be
done with the help of ropes. but when we
reached the summit, the majestic views
surpassed our exhaustion. The air was cool
and clean, and we could see down in the
distance most of the Tihama and the Red
Sea.
Regah is a small village, and while the
stone-built houses stand rm and proud,
the alleys are narrow and abrupt, no doubt
orderly and wide for the locals, who passed
us by with smiles and salaams.
We stayed at Mohammed Al Gharibs
house, who hires his mafraj as an improvised

12

funduq for the occasional visitor. He fed us,

brought qat and tea and, as the night fell, we
were soon
asleep, fatigue overwhelming the mild
effects of dry season qat.
The next morning, before breakfast, we
walked to the north end of the village, and
from this point, another world-class view
extended before our eyes: Dozens of small
islands, each
Topped by its own village, oated in a
sea of clouds, and innitum. It was the
quintessential view of Yemen, the power
and magic of nature adorned with the
fortress-like stone village the Yemenis have
built through the centuries. It came to me
the overpowering sensation that we are
nothing but tiny creatures in Gods immense
creation. Children were already arriving to
school from these far away villages, happy
to join their mates for their daily lessons.
And life went about in Bura as usual while
we made our way down to the car.
Just a couple of weeks ago, I returned with
a group of Spanish tourists, and to my
surprise, the asphalt road will soon reach
the top of the mountain, and electricity
has already been brought to many of the
villages.

Houses decorated with multicolored

garlands of light, show every night the joy
of the locals. Soon water will be pumped to
every village and a new era will begin for
Jebel Bura.
To my group of tourists, Bura was one of the
highlights of their 3-weeks trip in Yemen,
such is the timeless beauty that awaits the
visitor and the hospitality shown by the
villagers. For
the t and more adventurous, there are
many walks to be made in the area, such
as the hard 3-days trek to Manakha, or the
walk down to the Tihama through the Jebel
Azin Conservation Area, a paradise for bird
watchers in some of the last wooded areas in
Yemen where, some maintain, leopards and
hyenas still may roam.
Romantic conservationists would argue that
development and tourism can break havoc in
the delicate balance between man and nature
here, but no one can deny the right of these
peoples to access basic commodities such as
roads, electricity and water.
The problem of sustainability can only be
solved with the education of locals and
visitors alike, so that the beauty of Jebel
Bura stands forever as the past generations
kept it for us.

above the hot and dusty plains of the

Tihama, from where one has to strain the
eye to believe that such imposing peaks
are crowned with villages. So, I was
delighted with anticipation last year, when
an offer came to visit Bura from my friend
Mohammed Al-Nuzaili of BTA Tours in
Old Sanaa, who has been visiting the area
for more than ten years.
The approach from the upper Tihama, near
Bajil, is arid and non-descriptive. But soon,
at a turn of the road, one suddenly confronts
the magnicence of the giant granite massif.

10

Then, the road starts climbing through steep

and dry ravines where families of monkeys
are commonly seen. And at a certain
altitude, the miracle begins:
From that point, all the way to the top, the
valley is fully sculpted in terraces, made of
cut rock walls, a panorama that has nothing
to envy the world famous paddy terraces of
Bali and the Philippines.
These terraces, built centuries ago to supply
the demand of coffee from all corners of
the world, are the blood, sweat and tears
of the Bura inhabitants. The coffee beans

were carried to the weekly market of Bayt

Al- Fakih from where they were exported
through the port of Al-Mokha to their nal
destinations in Paris, Vienna, Istanbul and
beyond.
Today, as elsewhere in Yemen, coffee has
been almost completely replaced with qat,
for economic reasons, due to the fact that
world coffee prices have stagnated for
decades, while local demand for qat keeps
growing.
But, be it coffee or qat, whats more
interesting about Jebel Bura is that

through most of the year there is no rain or

permanent water courses, so the local had to
excavate cisterns to
collect the erratic but torrential sea sonal
rains. When these cisterns nally dry-out,
local women climb down the mountain in
caravans, sometimes in 12-hour round rips
through incredibly steep paths to natural
wells at the bottom of the valley, each
woman carrying a 14-liter tank, sometimes
carrying donkeys to add capacity. And this
is for many of them a daily task in addition
to family, house and cattle keeping.

When I rst saw these women, an

impossible dejavu ashed in my mind,
for, at rst sight, their black velvet attire
with gold and silver decorations resembles
strikingly with that of some South East
Asian hill tribes, and, as far as I Know, this
is the one of the few places in Arabia where
women still commonly wear their traditional
dresses.
Not yet awaken from these surprises, we
reached the rst village, Al-Rebot, where
the road ended, and we met our local guide,
Ahmed. We camped nearby, and after the

customary qat chewing and a homely dinner,

we slept under the stars, the only other light
in the valley coming from the odd generatorpowered house and the petrol lamps of the
caravans of women returning with their
precious cargo of water.
At dawn and after breakfast, we made
our packs and started walking up the path
stopping for breath every now and then,
crossing on the way with men and children
hurrying to work
or school. Some girls were already on their
way back home, carrying huge

Yemen has always been an important trade link between the East and the West since
ancient times. It is strategically located on the Bab el Mandeb strait and has been a
central shipping hub for thousands of years too.

The prospective visitor to Yemen has the

architecture of the cities in mind. Also, the
legends surrounding the Queen of Sheba and
the past riches of frankincense and myrrh
trade complete the basic idea one usually
has when landing for the rst time at Sanaa
airport.
But once the traveler has spent a few days
around the country, this calendar cliche of
Yemen dilutes into the more obvious reality
that Yemen is product of the interaction
between the land made the people and the
people shaped its country. When one sees so
many eagle-nest villages, one thinks of the

turbulent history of the country, and how the

yemeni managed to survive for uncountable
centuries in those harsh and inaccessible
places. Certainly, Yemen is the Green
Arabia, although it doesnt mean water is
easily available through the year.
Thus, the yemeni have adapted their land
to retain the precious element and the scare
fertile earth in the mountains with manmade terraces, in the valleys preparing their
gardens for seasonal ooding and water-well
irrigation.
This can be witnessed all around the
country, but if one has to choose a place

where to nd this incredible feat of

adaptation at its most extreme, that place has
to be Jebel Bura.
While Bura is still widely ignored by
guidebooks, I had heard raving reports of its
beauty from Yemeni friends, and read about
it in a back issue of Yemenia magazine
about two
years ago, not forgetting the hilarious
account of an ill-prepared visit by the
energetic Scottish-tuned-Yemeni Tim
Mcintosh smith in his book Travels in
Dictionary land.
Jebel Bura towers more than 2000 meters
