What has changed? -Banquo is still Macbeths loyal friend, but banquo has now, in act III, started doubting macbeths path towards the kings title. C. Literary Focus. Tragedy. What is Macbeth trying to accomplish when he says that his bloody cousins have fled to England and Ireland? -hes trying to make them look as if they ran away, possibly because of complicity in the kings death. Explain your answer. -it might support it since there was not third murderer addressed when the other 2 met with Macbeth previously to the killing, but If he had been the third murderer then he wouldve know what had happened beforehand and wouldnt have had the need for the 1rst murderer to notify him, plus, Macbeth wouldve made sure they had both been killed. Act III Applying your Skills 1. Macbeth publicly announces that he will be alone until dinner. What does he really do during this time? - he speaks to the murderers to arrange for Banquos and his sons assassination. 2. Why does Macbeth refuse to sit in the chair that is offered to him at dinner? -he refuses because according to his perception, it is taken, by someone, at first he doesnt notices who he is but then sees its Banquos walking corpse. 3. Where is Macduff during Act III? Why? - Hes in the English court where hes taking refugee from Macbeths accusations. 4. How does Shakespeare portray Macbeths tragic flaw in this act? -his ambition is portrayed in his decisions to keep murdering for the safety of his reign to prevail. 6. Analyze. In Act I, Lady Macbeth attacks Macbeths masculinity and thereby convinces him to murder Duncan. How does the question of manhood come up in Act III? -She tells him how he is acting like a woman telling stories by a chimney, this being his reaction to the hallucination of Banquos corpse. She is asking him to regain his composture. 7. Analyze. How do lines 27-34 in Act III, Scene 2 express the foul is fair theme? - is an apparent contradiction. It suggests that the play will focus on the disruption of the natural order of things. 8. Interpret. When the two murderers explain their criminal behaviour, what do we learn about them? -we learn that they have suffered to an extreme seeing that they do not care for the sake of their own lives. We also learn that macbeths attempt at convincing them attacking their nature has been successful. 9. Interpret. The events during the dinner entrance (Act III, 4, 1-2) and exit (lines 119-120) are quite different. Why is this difference significant? -this is when the murderer is coming to inform Macbeths of the results of the plan against Banquo and his son. 10. Evaluate.
