Why surface preparation or blast clean the surface?
.............................................................................................................
It has been estimated that 60% to 80% of all premature coating failure are caused
either completely or partially by inadequate or improper surface preparation.
- To remove contaminants which could cause premature breakdown.
- To provide a mechanical key to optimise adhesion of the system.
.......................................................
Why apply a Primer?
............................................
To afford temporary protection of the blasted steel surface without degrading the
mechanical adhesion gained from the blast cleaning.
..................................................
Why stripe coat?
.......................................
This is an extra coat of material usually applied by brush, to build up thickness
along edges of beams, around nuts and bolts and in less accessible areas.
It is generally applied as an additional undercoat and should be of a contrasting
colour.
........................................................................................
Why Test the Finshed System?
.......................................................................
To verify the average total applied system thickness and highlight any low areas.
To verify the coating system is free of all pinholes or other holidays (defects).

..............................................................
Why apply a topcoat?
..............................................................
To give a lining which is chemically resistant and easy to repair and inspect.
To contribute the overall corrosion protection offered by the system.
