event with Frances Fox Piven, scheduled for March 5. z
Madeline Talbott gave the chairperson’s report. She reflected on our involvemtent in the Alico
Palmer campaign, and the urgency of Willie Delgado’s election. She suggested that the scale of
*a congressional campaign was to> large for the New Party to have a scrious impact, cven though
‘we did nearly double the percentage of Alice Palmer's vote in a very small geographic area of
about 6 precincts. Delgado’s campaign for state representative, however, is better suited to the
capacity of the New Party.
‘Anne Miller gave a report on Wilie Delgad's campaign, and recite ational elutes for
election day work and canvassing.
Danny Davis, candidate for Congress in the 7th Congressional District; gave a statement to the 20+:

As for whether we want un-renewed people to be voting or not, I think it’s better if we leave
voting and running open to any member, for the sole reason of allowing Vargas on the DEC. If
‘we can’t be sure we can get an exception granted for Vargas then it doesn’t serve our purpose to
allow un-renewed people to vote.
The other big issue here is tht if Anne, Amy and Marilyn are told they can't vote at the meeting
and Hassan is told he can't run, they will all scream bloody murder, and you don’t want it
screamed at you. Frankly, I think you've left yourself open for attack from either side of the
issue. Either you're attacked for allowing non-renewed people to vote after saying they wouldn't
be allowed to, or your attacked ‘or denying people the chance to vote without having wamed
‘them, But I can’t imagine that Anne, Amy, and Marilyn won’t raise hell if they’re told they can’t
vote. They will say that it's the responsibility of the New Party to tell them when their dues
come due, especially when it is -elevant for an important vote. I’m not sure how we would
counter that argument. We haven’t done a renewal mailing since, I think, December, (I just sent
one this week) so we're open to attack here,
Here's how I would play it: at the steering committee you can raise the issue and say that you
yrould be open to interpreting the elections procedures document to mean that a person must
have joined by 4/6/97 but need rot have been renewed by that time. You don’t need to argue
hhard for this, but gently suggest that this is what you favor, though you're not going to go to the
wall on it. My bet is that Fred and Dan will probably jump in immediately to oppose this
(because that’s not how they interpreted the rules, because they won't realize that they'll lose a
number of votes, and because thy’ll think that it's a manuever on your part to get voting
priviledges for hoards of unrenewed ACORN members—remember that after the November
meeting, Smathers proposed tha: we remove unrenewed members from the rolls). You can then
respond that if they feel very strongly about it then you're not going to fight over it, but you
‘want to state for the record that you think we should open it up to everyone and that you refuse
to be the one who takes the heat at the meeting when people are told they're not eligible to vote
You can get Fred or Dan or Carl to be the one who will explain voting procedures and tell
people they can’t vote and get the crap beaten out of them by their own constituents.
On the election itself, clearly Lass and Kruglik are the most vulnerable targets, because they're
new, because they are organizational people (which should be viewed as an asset but who knows
‘with this crowd), and because they’ re white guys. I doubt Fred will run against you (probably
chicken shit) and I doubt he'll run against Janive (face). Hassan could ran against anyone. The
real danger is he can make a big issue out of needing a majosity African American steering
committee, and I'm not sure he wouldn't win a few of our people on that, We have to figure out
a way for Ted, Thompson, Angela, and anyone else to innoculate heavily against this appeal
during the pre-meeting.

On the “cligible” side, we would still have a significant mumber of voters who can be turned out,
many of who are regulars:
Elizabeth Barnes Denise Hardiman Juanita Humphries
‘Melford Canady “Maggie Davis LaTanya Henderson
Betty Cunningham Dorothy Jackson Sabrina Colemen
John Donahue Dorothy Hill Janice Kelly
Ed Cox Christine Fulford Mary Hollis
Mike Kruglik Gilrey Lennan Willie Lloyd
Sandra Maxwell Gerardo Munoz Lou Pardo
Denise Phelps Antoine Rogers Angela Ross
Oddie Santorelli Martina Smith “Michael Stewart
Eva Mao Sykes Imogene Sommerville Nelson Soza
Lowry Taylor Odessa White Clifford Wilson
Marcelo Z. Lula Bronson Floyd Gause
“Myra Glassman Brian Kettenring Lilly Petty
Zenobia Scurry Ted Thomas James Thompson
Lillie Wash. Keita Kelleher Madeline Talbott
Betty Swan Paula Richard Helen Miller
“That's about 46 votes if we can turn them all out. There are others who aren’t listed here who
would vote our way if wo prep. them and tim them out, mostly 17th Ward and 24th Ward.
‘On the other side, the number of eligible “likely voters” is much smaller:
Daria Casinelli Bob Palmer Dave Rolston
Carl Davidson Cornie Hall ‘Dan Swinney
David Smathers Fred Friedman
Then there are others where it’s bard to know where they would come down:
fra Cohen Hannah Cohen Ron Baiman
Dina Mattola Irene Falconer Esther Prinz
Krisanne Rehbein Liz O'Connor Elizabeth Benson
