Bifilar Suspension (Constant d1, d2 )

Aim: To find the moment of inertia of any object using bifilar suspension method. Apparatus: Stand, Stopwatch, given object, thread etc. Procedure: 1.Suspend the given object as shown in the figure. 2. Give small angular displacement to the object with respect to The vertical line so that it can have angular oscillations. 3. Note the time for 30 oscillations and calculate its time period T, Using the formula calculate its moment of inertia (MOI). 4. Repeat the step 1, 2, and 3 for five different lengths (l).

d2 l d1 l

Formula : T = 4

I .l mgd 1d 2 g=980 cm sec 2

mgd 1d 2 T 2 I = 16 2 l

Where, I= moment of inertia of the object about the vertical axis. m=mass of the object =Length of the threads AC=BD d1=Distance between the two lower ends of the threads. d2=Distance between the two upper ends of the threads. Theoretical Calculation : L2 + B 2 MOI of rectangular bar = m I2 Result : L2 r 2 MOI of cylindrical bar I=m + I2 4
