Teaching Vocabulary at Theme Fruits Through Crossword Puzzle at the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 6 Palembang. Thesis, English Education, Muhammadiyah University Palembang. The title of thesis was Teaching Vocabulary at Theme Fruits Through Crossword Puzzle at the Seventh Grade Students of SMP The objective of this study was to find out whether or not crossword puzzle is effective in teaching vocabulary at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 6. Quasy experimental was used in this reseacrh. The population of this study were 262 from 8 classes, 62 students were chosen by simple random sampling as the sample of this study. Technique for collecting the data used crossword puzzle. The test consisted of 2 part where in each crossword puzzle consisted of 20 questions in cross and down clues. The data were analyzed by using (1) the conversion of percentage range, and (2) the matched t- test to compare between the results of the pre-test and the post-test. On the results of the data analysis, it showed that mean score of the experimental group in the pre-test was 6.54 while the control group was 6.59. The mean score of the experimental group in the post-test was 7.24 and the control group was 7.09. The tobtained > t-table = 5 > 2.05. Two hypothesis were used to measure whether or not crossword puzzle effective in teaching vocabulary to the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 6 Palembang, they were Null Hypothesis (Ho) and Alternative Hypothesis(Ha). Based on the result calculation, it showed that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It mean that using crossword puzzle in teaching vocabulary to the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Palembang in academic year 2011/2012 was effective.
