Jacquard Mechanism

Textile designs are essentially programmed by connecting a series of metal punch cards together and placing them at the top feeder end of the loom. As the cards are pulled through the apparatus, the weaving pattern of fabric emerges.

Each punch card contains a series of perforated holes.

The holes in the card correspond to hooks, which can either be positioned up or down. The sequence of raised and lowered threads creates a pattern in the fabric. Each hook is connected to a number of threads, allowing more than one repeat of a particular pattern.
