Faithful Citizenship
Forming ones conscience is a personal responsibility and one that cannot be escaped by saying, I didnt know. The Church calls on everyone to have a well formed, informed conscience. The path is given in both the United States Catechism for Adults (USCA) and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). A well formed conscience is upright and truthful. It formulates its judgments according to reason, in conformity with the true good willed by the wisdom of the Creator. Everyone must avail himself of the means to form his conscience. (CCC 178) The Word of God is a principal tool in the formation of conscience when it is assimilated by study, prayer, and practice (USCA pg. 314) And finally, In the formation of conscience the Word of God is the light for our path, we must assimilate it in faith and prayer and put it into practice. We must also examine our conscience before the Lords Cross. We are assisted by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, aided by the witness or advice of others and guided by the authoritative teaching of the Church. (CCC 1785) All that to say each person must know the issues and properly form their consciences. A big responsibility! According to the Church there is no way out of this responsibility. The formation of a good conscience is another fundamental element of Christian moral teaching. (USCA pg. 314). Hopefully the articles for the following weeks will aid not only in the awareness of issues but also in the responsibility of formation of conscience.
Congratulations to
