Faithful Citizenship
Forming ones conscience is a personal responsibility and one that cannot be escaped by saying, I didnt know. The Church calls on everyone to have a well formed, informed conscience. The path is given in both the United States Catechism for Adults (USCA) and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). A well formed conscience is upright and truthful. It formulates its judgments according to reason, in conformity with the true good willed by the wisdom of the Creator. Everyone must avail himself of the means to form his conscience. (CCC 178) The Word of God is a principal tool in the formation of conscience when it is assimilated by study, prayer, and practice (USCA pg. 314) And finally, In the formation of conscience the Word of God is the light for our path, we must assimilate it in faith and prayer and put it into practice. We must also examine our conscience before the Lords Cross. We are assisted by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, aided by the witness or advice of others and guided by the authoritative teaching of the Church. (CCC 1785) All that to say each person must know the issues and properly form their consciences. A big responsibility! According to the Church there is no way out of this responsibility. The formation of a good conscience is another fundamental element of Christian moral teaching. (USCA pg. 314). Hopefully the articles for the following weeks will aid not only in the awareness of issues but also in the responsibility of formation of conscience.

Congratulations to

Anointing of the Sick

On Saturday, August 4, 2012, SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish will celebrate the Anointing of the Sick at the 11 AM Mass. We extend an invitation to those in our Parish Family who feel that the Celebration of Anointing will provide help for them in sickness and aging of their bodies. In the past, the Anointing was done near the time of death. Theology today understands Anointing as the Sacrament of the sick rather that at the time of approaching death. The Anointing of the Sick is the prayer of Christ and His Church for the physical and spiritual health of the sick person. Who may be Anointed?

This weekend, we welcome Fr. Janusz Horowski SVD and Deacon Ivan Lazcano of the Divine Word Missionaries. Fr. Janusz and Deacon Ivan will speak about the work of Divine Word Missionaries in India. Fr. Janusz was a missionary in Brazil for many years and he also worked with the poor and needy in Mexico. Fr. Janusz currently assists at several Polish parishes besides working in the Provincial headquarters for the Divine Word Missionaries as Director Development. Deacon Ivan has served as a missionary in Guatemala, Bolivia, Mexico and the Chicago area. Deacon Ivan divides his time between the Divine Word Mission office in Techny, preaching, directing retreats and ministering at parishes. Please welcome Fr. Janusz and Deacon Ivan. This Mission Appeal is part of the Mission Coop Program of the Archdiocese. Please be generous in the second collection to help support the missionary work of the Divine Word Missionaries. Their missionaries serve in some of the most difficult areas of our world.

A sick person may be Anointed before he/she undergoes surgery, whether or not the surgery is serious. Persons with chronic illness. Older persons, even if they are not suffering from dangerous illness. Mentally disabled persons and chemically dependent persons. A sick child may be Anointed in order to be comforted and uplifted by the Sacrament.

Following the Mass there will be a luncheon in the back of the gym. If you wish to participate in the Anointing of the Sick, Saturday, August 4th, please detach and return the form below to the rectory or the collection basket no later than Friday, July 27th. It is very important for us to have an accurate count for the meal. If you have any questions, please call (630) 257-2776.

Rachel Hunter
Rachel graduated from Lemont High School in May. She was active on the speech team, National Honors Society and student council. She was also editor of the design for the school newspaper.
