: A wish

History stood perfectly still

As I beheld you
.Majestically poised upon the hill
Through your gate I walked
Transformed in Time
Transformed in Place
Transformed in Feelings
I felt
Silence there was
But many voices I heard
Some in my ancestral tongue
The Arabic of long ago
Some in other tongues
.Of people I never saw
Yet their departed souls
Mysteriously still hang all over the
place
I felt them all
As one "ilsien" they spoke
.The language of the soul
In the silence rang the bells
Of the magnificent Cathedral
Piercing the stillness
Echoing against the walls
But, alone in them I heard
The call to the prayer
"Raised by a forlorn "mwezzin
Sweetly a great joy in my heart I felt
The joy of prayer to Allah
For He was there
In the church In the mosque
.And everywhere
Freshly thin was the air
A moment of serenity
Wonderfully rare
But the speaking silence was always
.there
Short was the distance
Long was the journey
Tired was I
As I spotted an elegant caf
In a tiny corner I sat
Savouring my croissant
Sipping my tea
.Watching the waitress smiling gently
Alas, silence persistently whispered in
my ear
Many tongues I continued to hear
Comprehensible
Incomprehensible
To all I lent a sympathetic ear
for amidst that Mdina atmosphere
.Cured was I of every fear

I wish I could escape

To far away cities
With uncharted roads
To distant islands
Whose bays glitter like rubies
In vanishing sun rays
There I shall cast my anchor
A worn out sailor
A torn sail
An exhausted ship
There I shall reside
Before the day is done
