Assignment in Values Education

(Reaction on Movie : Sanglaan) Maria Vanessa V. Irineo July 16, 2012 1.) Characters: Amy- someone like an adopted daughter to Olivia; works at the pawnshop; likes David; liked by Henry; played by Ina Feleo. David- A seaman waiting for a new contract, rented a space above the pawnshop; the former prom king when he and Amy were in high school; treated Mang Kanor and Esing like family; played by Joem Bascon. Olivia- owned the pawnshop after her husband died; didn't want to go to America to her son because of the memory of her husband on the pawnshop; played by Tessie Tomas. Mang Kanor- the security guard of the pawnshop; husband of Esing; son died at war; sold his kidney for money to pay the hospital bills of Esing, played by Jess Evardone. Esing- wife of Mang Kanor; health depleted because of depression form death of son; was hospitalized; played by Flor Salanga. Henry- liked Amy; a 5 6 money lender; had illegal means to make money; selfish; forced Amy on a date; played by Neil Ryan Sese. 2.) a: When it was Olivia's birthday and her son told her to come to America was when it all started. Then on the celebration they heard in the television that Esing and Kanor's son died at the war. b: When the pawnshop was robbed during one night was the climax of the story for me. It is when all the pent up tension and emotion exploded. After this particular scene, the emotion and the tension started to settle down. But in truth, each character has their own climax. Like Amy's, hers was when she went out on a date with Henry, Kanor is when he told his wife he sold the television and Olivia is when she had her first robbery, but since it all came down to the robbery scene at night in which almost all the characters were there, it is the climax of the story for me. c: When Olivia talked to Amy about going to America to visit her son, when Esing was released from the hospital is when things started to return to normal and the tension was drawn down. d: When Amy returned David's ring and it seemed like she accepted that they can't be together. in truth, I think this ending really suits Amy. She had to learn that she also has to love herself before giving her heart to someone. You can't act like a desperate girl wanting her crush to notice her all the time. David leaving only showed her that. But this ending wanted me to have a sequel. Will David realize that he also like Amy? Will Amy learn and act that she has to have respect for herself? Will Olivia open the pawnshop again? Is David still contacting Mang Kanor and Esing? many things could still happen to the story.

3.) From my own experience, the only one I could think of is about my grandmother. You see, she owns a catering service and a canteen before. She, like Olivia, is very stubborn about closing it even though it is broke. She is always offered to stay with her children in the states, but she refuses to leave the service. Though, she closes it from time to time when she really can't take it and then work abroad for some time and when she has enough money, she goes back here and opens it up again. the cycle is then repeated. i admire her for her perseverance in working and managing the service. She even takes in some girls sometimes that work for her. she treats them like her own kids too. With her service, she gives many jobs to her workers who always look forward to the opening again of the business. And all of these she does even though she's past 70 years of age. She treats each of her grandchildren, even me, great. I know she loves us and so I felt ashamed that I got angry at her a few years back that it came to a point I didn't want to visit her anymore and my dad had to force me to visit. But thanks to YFC, which thought me how anger is normal but it is not forgiving that is a sin. Like Olivia, my grandmother also experienced robbery. her money was taken, along with her phones. but she strived to keep her business. Up until now, her work is doing well. She sells burgers and other stuff at the State university at our place, she caters for huge events and she own a small store for home made food at her home. right now, her store has 2 branches in Batangas and I can say I am thankful for her love, support and being a great model for me.
