Fire company seeking outside volunteers
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Moorestown Sun
Moorestown Township Fire
District No. 1 is opening its volun-
teer ranks to non-Moorestown
residents for the first time in the
fire departments history.
New volunteers must be within
five miles of either of the dis-
tricts fire stations and must be
certified by the state as Fire-
fighters One prior to joining.
The 100 percent volunteer de-
partment currently has 50 to 55
volunteer firefighters on staff.
The volunteers are split between
the two district fire stations and
respond to calls coming out of
each zone, Fire District Adminis-
trator Chris Chesner said.
However, the district only has
about 25 interior firefighters,
he said, which means that only 25
firefighters can actually go into a
burning building or structure
when on the scene of a fire, he
said.
Its a big-time commitment,
Chesner said, and with many vol-
unteers also holding down one or
more jobs and with family duties
as well, it can be very tough to
find time as a volunteer.
Its tough during the day for
our districts response. We need
more members during the day,
more members 24 hours a day,
seven days a week actually, Ches-

The Moorestown Sun
Despite a lawsuit hanging over
the proceedings, the Moorestown
Council announced last week that
five deposits have been made in
good faith from two organiza-
tions to purchase five of six avail-
able liquor licenses in the town-
ship.
Township Manager Scott
Carew reported that Pennsylva-
nia Real Estate Investment Trust
has made four deposits for four
liquor licenses that will be used
for potential restaurants and
businesses in the Moorestown
Mall. PREIT has pledged to pur-
chase all four at a price of $1 mil-
lion each, Carew said.
East Gate has also made a
good faith deposit to purchase a
liquor license that will be used at
the East Gate Shopping Center
located across the street from the
mall for a price of $1,030,000,
Carew said.
Township Solicitor Thomas
Coleman III said he and the town-
ship clerk are in the process of re-
viewing the applications for the
liquor licenses and will most like-
ly have a resolution for the Mon-
day, July 23 meeting at 7:30 p.m. in
the Moorestown High School IT
Room.
Originally, township residents
voted in favor of a referendum to
allow for liquor licenses to only
be sold within the confines of the
Moorestown Mall. In the spring,
representatives from East Gate
sued the township for the right to
purchase one of the liquor licens-
es.
The lawsuit is ongoing, Cole-
man said, and East Gates liquor
license application will be de-
pendent on the outcome of the
suit.
Councilmember Chris Chiac-
chio jokingly asked if the lawsuit
doesnt go in favor of East Gate,
will the township have to give the
money back from the deposit?
Coleman informed him that
unfortunately the township
would have to refund the deposit.
The township is allowed to sell
six liquor licenses.
In other township news:
Carew informed the township
that the sports leagues are close
to finalizing a menu of sponsor-
ship opportunities that will be
available at the various parks and
sports facilities throughout the

Y
ouve no doubt passed someone
texting while driving. The per-
sons focus isnt on the road. In-
stead, its on spelling a word correctly
or getting that last comment in.
But a bill in the state Senate it
passed recently by a 38-0 margin
would hike fines for texting-while-driv-
ing considerably. And repeat offenders
would face stiff fines and a possible
drivers license suspension.
If the bill passes in the Assembly,
and Gov. Christie signs the bill into
law, a first-time offender would face a
fine of $200, up from the current $100
fine.
A second offense would run a mo-
torist a $400 fine, and a third offense,
$600.
A three-time offender would be
slapped with three drivers-license
points.
And a fourth-time offender would be
subject to a license suspension of 90
days.
We applaud this bill and want to see
the Assembly pass it and the governor
sign it into law.
Though New Jersey already has
tough texting-while-driving laws on
the books, a short ride on any of the
states major roads would reveal the
penalties are not yet tough enough.
Far too often, people recklessly pay
more attention to their texting than
they do the road.
And quite frankly, the larger fines
and the prospect of losing a drivers li-
cense for up to three months for repeat
offenders is the right penalty for this
kind of behavior.
Its bad enough in 2012 when people
drive while speaking on the phone
(without the use of a headset or blue-
tooth device).
But texting is clearly worse. And
more distracting. And its time people
who gamble with the lives of others
while driving and texting pay a hefty
price for doing so.
This bill must pass in the Assembly,
and the governor must sign it into law.
Swiftly.
in our opinion
Texting bill is on the button
Fines for sending messages while driving would double under new law
Will you still text and drive?
Despite the prospect of a much
tougher state texting-and-driving law,
we wonder if itll matter to local drivers.
Will you still text and drive if the new
law passes?

Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat, the first
full-length musical by the leg-
endary team Andrew Lloyd Web-
ber and Tim Rice, lights up the
Dennis Flyer Theatre stage this
July.
Presented by Mainstage Center
for the Arts, this popular retelling
of the Biblical story of Joseph
and his coat of many colors is
jam-packed with an energetic mix
of music and dancing.
Josh Toro, of Moorestown,
plays the lead role of Joseph, a
boy who can interpret dreams
and receives the coat as a gift
from his father, Jacob (Joshua
Brooks of Williamstown). His
jealous brothers sell him into
slavery in Egypt, where he is pur-
chased by Potiphar (Charles
Ward of Deptford).
Potiphars wife (Grace Szczep-
kowski of Marlton) has him
thrown into jail after he rejects
her. While imprisoned, news of
Josephs prophetic abilities
reaches the Pharaoh, comically
portrayed as Elvis by JD Shaw of
Stratford.
Joseph soon becomes second in
command. Having suffered years
of hardship, Josephs brothers
eventually find themselves beg-
ging for mercy from the brother
they once betrayed.
The colorful story is told al-
most completely through song
and dance, featuring a wide vari-
ety of memorable musical num-
bers including Any Dream Will
Do, Benjamin Calypso, Jacob
and Sons/Josephs Coat, Song
of the King and Go, Go, Go
Joseph.
Its not only the adults who will
appreciate Joseph. The shows up-
beat nature and moral lessons
also make it a great theatrical ex-
perience for younger audiences.
And, the Mainstage production,
like the Broadway productions of
Joseph, features a childrens cho-
rus.
Though Toros performed with
other local theatres, Joseph
marks his first Mainstage appear-
ance.
In addition to Fiscella, Josephs
creative team includes choreogra-
pher, Renee Chambers Liciaga of
Mount Laurel; vocal director,
Evan Figueras of Washington
Township; set designer Tom
Weaver of Cherry Hill; and cos-
tume designers, Linda Nese of
Gloucester Township and
Bethany Campbell of Deptford.
Vince Gentless of Gloucester
Township will direct a live or-
chestra for all performances.

easier. After people get back from
work they can jump on calls. But
now, with other commitments
and dual jobs, its quite an obliga-
tion for our volunteers. Were try-
ing our best to bolster our ranks.
The district is focusing on re-
tention and recruitment for its
volunteers, Chesner said, and this
new program will be reevaluated
after being in place for six
months.
It went into effect in late June,
he said, and the department has
already signed up one new volun-
teer who doesnt live in
Moorestown, but is within the
five-mile radius.
Wed love for people to knock
on our door, ask us questions, and
get to know us. Its a lot of fun, its
demanding, theres no doubt
about that. Were up front with
them about that, Chesner said.
The initial training is 140 hours,
its a big-time commitment that
they have to go up to the fire acad-
emy. Every Thursday evening you
have drills for two to four
hours, and then 700 fire calls a
year.

site at www.moorestownfire.org

township.
The sponsorship opportunities
will vary from signs on an out-
field fence, Carew said, to having
the name of a company or busi-
ness on the facilitys scoreboard.
However, to make the program
more successful, Carew said the
township council should serious-
ly consider amending the zoning
boards sign size resolution to
allow for larger signs at the fields.
The resolution is extremely
strict about the size of the signs,
Carew said, and to allow for more
revenue through the sponsorship
they should be bigger.
The sponsorship program will
likely not be ready for the fall
sport season, he said, but should
be able to be instituted by the
spring.

Some people think Marc Dalio
is a beast.
Actually the director for the
2012 MoorArts summer theater
production is a pretty nice guy.
But he heard plenty of applause
when he starred as the Beast and
Gaston in the Broadway National
Tour of Disneys Beauty and the
Beast. Dalios acting credits
loom large and include a series of
leading roles yet he is equally
accomplished working behind the
scenes. His directorial resume is
studded with familiar favorites
like South Pacific, Guys and
Dolls and Godspell, but he also
makes a point to get involved with
shows that offer something fresh
and challenging.
It was the opportunity to direct
The 25th Annual Putnam Coun-
ty Spelling Bee that brought
Dalio to Moorestown this sum-
mer.
Spelling Bee is a favorite
among theater insiders. Known
for its brisk wit as well as its em-
pathy and heart, the show focuses
on a group of brainy middle-
school misfits (played by young
adults), each vying to emerge as
the winner of the county spelling
competition. The characters be-
come more endearing as their
personalities and back stories are
revealed. As they grapple with
adolescent angst, overbearing
parents, and the rules of the
game, they leave the bee with
some life lessons under their
belts, making the show not only
funny, but wise.
Dalios vision for the MoorArts
production includes the audience
participation and ad lib interjec-
tions by the players that helped
make the musical a tony winning
hit. To draw viewers into the ex-
citement, all seating for the show
will be on the stage surrounding
the action. In advance of each
performance, four audience mem-
bers will be selected to be contes-
tants in the bee. The spontaneity
of the characters interacting
with the audience recruits makes
each show unique.
The cast hails from across
South Jersey and Philadelphia.
Moorestown veteran players
Ryan Wyrofsky and John Comeg-
no are joined by the talented team
of Jarad Benn, Denise Augustyn,
Kyrus Keenan Westcott, Emily
McHale, Anthony Ieradi, Olivia
Manlove, and Kristen Burke. As
with every MoorArts production,
the instrumental music for the
show will be live.
Remaining performances are
July 18, 20 and 21 on the stage of
the Moorestown High School au-
ditorium. The shows begin at 8
p.m. each night. Tickets are avail-
able online at www.moorarts.org.
Spelling Bee is recommended for
audiences over the age of 12.
MoorArts is a non-profit organ-
ization dedicated to promoting
the arts in Moorestown schools
and throughout the community.
All proceeds from the show sup-
port student scholarships and
teacher grants in the arts.
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee continues through July 21
