MATH 1337 - Honors Introductory Math - TEST 2

July 16, 2012

This test is closed notes/book and no calculators. This test is meant to be challenging. You have 3 hours. Good luck! (After the 3 hour period, redo the test using books/notes/Internet with no time limit.) 1. Find the root(s) of x2 + 4. 2. Let denote an operation for which u Find 2 3. Expand (i.e. write in non-factored form) a) (x 2)(x + 3) b) (3x + 5x)(7 x)2 c) 3( 2 + )3 4. Sketch the inequality x2 + y 1 5. The equation of a straight line can be written in point-slope form, yy0 = m(xx0 ), where y0 and x0 refers to some point on the line and m is the slope of the line. Use point-slope form to nd the slope-intercept form (y = mx + b) equation of the straight line passing through (3, 5) and that has a slope of 4. 6. Rewrite x2 + 4x 4 in the form (x a)(x b) c where a, b, c are constants R. 7. (Optimization) As a farmer, you are to build an enclosure for your sheep. For the task, you have 40m of fencing material. Since you like your animals to have as much freedom as possible, youd like to build the enclosure such that the area enclosed is as large as possible. (Hint 1: this amounts to nding a function for the area of the enclosure and nding the maximum value of this function, i.e. where the area is the largest. Hint 2: Keep the symmetry of a parabola in mind. Hint 3: you need to somehow reduce a 2-variable problem into a 1-variable problem, using the constraint.) Find the largest possible 2-dimensional area that can be enclosed using a 40m long fence. 1 v = u(u v 2 ) (3 + )

8. Is (x 3)(x + 2) (x + 5)(x + 7) in factored form? 9. Find the straight line that is perpendicular to the line y = 3x+4 and passes through the origin. 10. (Integration). The area under a curve between two points along the independent axis can be given with a denite integral, for instance the area under the curve 2 4x3 +2x+14 between the points 0.5 and 2 is given by the expression x4 + x2 + 14x|0.5 where the |2 part means that the expression is evaluated between 0.5 and 2. 0.5 Formally written, F (x)|b = F (b) F (a) and e.g. if F (x) = 3x, then F (x)|b = a a F (b) F (a) = 3b 3a. Find x4 + x2 + 14x|0.5 11. Solve for , +4<7 3 3 > 9 2 (r r)(r + 3r) and nd the value(s) of and r respectively r( + 3) for which the expression equals 0.

13. (Particle physics). A particle with mass m = 9 1031 is travelling with a velocity, v of 1 107 meters per second along a circular path with some radius R. The 2 magnitude of the acceleration, a of the particle is given by the equation a = v . In R order for the particle to keep travelling along the circular path, a force, F , must be continously applied to it. If F = 0.1 Newtons, what will the radius, R, of the circular path be given that F = ma? 14. (Innite power series). The type of inequality used in this problem occurs frequently in determining whether a series converges or not (i.e. its sum takes on a nite value)

for reference, the series used in the problem is

n=0

n(n+1)!x . 2(n+1)

Solve the inequality

for x in terms of n, 2n(n + 1)(n + 2)x <1 2n + 2
