Position of the course After the base course Operations Management the students have already developed a knowledge of the main problems, concepts and techniques to interact with the world of operations in an appropriate and efficient way. This course teaches students to play an active role as a manager in adapting and running an operational system. After this course the students should be able to play an active and leading role in a managerial position in operational management or as a consultant in the development and improvement of the operational systems. The course aims at training experts on design, implementation and management of new technologies, both in existing and in emerging organisations. Students should be able to formulate innovative ideas in order to improve an organisations performance. Contents Factory Physics: the corrupting influence of variability push versus pull production systems Manufacturing strategy in a factory Manufacturing strategy in an international network of factories Programs used in manufacturing strategy: focused factories cellular manufacturing lean, agile, six sigma mass customization Initial competences Final competences of an introductory Operations Management course. Final competences Quantify and evaluate the impact of variability on the performance of a production (Approved)

system. Critically assess the role of operations management in the competitive strategy of a company within an international context. Formulate plans for improvement to expand the strategic role of a production system. Evaluate whether and how new technologies, techniques and concepts such as lean six sigma and mass customization are strategically relevant for and can be applied to a given production system. Professionally report on a critical audit of a company's manufacturing strategy.
