SPLASH PRO SYSTEM

ISO 9001 Certified

1. Introduction The aggressive offshore environment of splash and inter-tidal zones makes corrosion control a challenge for conventional methods. These areas are exposed to waves, spray of seawater, and the atmosphere. The high concentration of salt, oxygen, temperature variation, and mechanical damage due to flotsam and jetsam makes the splash zone the most easily corroded part of a structure and also the most difficult to protect against corrosion. The Splash-Pro system is comprised of an interior anticorrosive barrier of petrolatum based STAC, and outer mechanical protection provided by a PE outerwrap. 2. STAC Splash-Pro offers solutions to these unique problems with its specially formulated combination of petrolatum-based STACprime (underwater), STACfill, and STACwrap. These petrolatum-based components repel seawater, salt, and oxygen, and passivates oxides. The STAC layer forms a corrosion barrier which stops corrosion on the piling surface immediately and indefinitely. 2.1. STAC System Overview The STAC coating system is a petrolatum based, multiple-layer barrier designed to isolate all metal surfaces. The STAC system consists of: STACprime A brush or roller applied, paste-like product to displace moisture and assure adhesion to the substrate STACfill A putty-like compound used to improve the contour of angular and irregular shaped surfaces. STACwrap A 100% synthetic stitch-bonded fabric saturated with a petrolatum compound for a longer lasting outer barrier seal. STACguard A tough, pressure sensitive over wrap to provide increased strength and electrical resistance.

STAC Advantages are: Easy Application Cost Efficient No V.O.C. Proven Long Life Service No Special Equipment necessary Minimal Surface Preparation Conforms to Irregular Surfaces

2.1.1. STACprime A key component of STAC Coating System for the initial treatment of metal surfaces prior to wrapping, STACprime displaces surface moisture, passivates surface oxides, fills surface imperfections and ensures adhesion between STACwrap and the substrate. STACprime Underwater is a modified formulation of STACprime for application on wet surfaces and under water. Composition: A unique blend of saturated petroleum hydrocarbons (petrolatum), inert fillers and corrosion inhibitors. STACprime is free of acids, alkalis, waxes, resins and saponifiable and other deleterious matter. Characteristics: Non-drying and non-hardening. Impervious to water. Highly resistant to mineral acids, alkalis and salts. Non-toxic, nonflammable. 2.1.2. STACfill A putty-like compound used for profiling around valves, flanges, fittings, nuts, bolts and other irregular shapes to improve contours prior to wrapping with STACwrap. Composition: A unique blend of saturated petroleum hydrocarbons (petrolatum), inert fillers and reinforcing fibers. Characteristics: Non-hardening and self-supporting compound which accommodates vibration and mechanical stress. Highly resistant to mineral acids, alkalis and salts. Non-toxic, non-flammable. 2.1.3. STACwrap For long-life corrosion protection, sealing and waterproofing of atmospheric, buried, and submerged metal surfaces. The high degree of conformability of STACwrap allows for application over irregular surface profiles. Composition: Non-woven, stitch-bonded, synthetic fabric carrier; fully saturated and coated with a neutral petrolatum compound blended with inert fillers and corrosion inhibitors. Characteristics: Stable in composition and plasticity over a wide temperature range. Non-hardening and non-cracking. Accommodates vibrations and extreme movement of the substrate. Highly resistant to mineral acids, alkalis and salts. High dielectric strength. Non-toxic, nonflammable. 2.2. Corrosion Protection Test Results Multiple tests have been conducted to measure the effectiveness of petrolatumbased products. Two test results are highlighted below: 1. Steel pipes half protected with STACwrap were subjected to a JIS salt spray test over a three-year period. The results were as follows: Corrosion rate (mm/year) Unprotected Protected 0.2100 - 0.3683 0.0014 - 0.0094 Avg % of Protection 98.23

*Report by Bird, Smith, and Bowley 2. Cups containing pipe specimens in water were placed in a desiccator with calcium chloride desiccant. After 4.94 years the protected samples exhibited an average corrosion rate of 0.000042mm/year. Unprotected samples were drastically higher, averaging 0.1733mm/year. *Tests performed by Technical Inspection Services, Inc. Houston, Texas Corrosion is produced on underground and aboveground pipelines when moisture, in combination with oxygen and current factors in the adjacent terrain produce an oxidation focus that perforates the surface of the metal. Thus if one of these three primary components (water, air, and metal) can be isolated then corrosion can be stopped. A primary characteristic of STAC is its ability to isolate water from the surface of the pipe. Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVT), Permeance (WVP), and Permeability Coefficient (P) all measure the speed at which moisture can penetrate a protective layer. Tests gauging the tape resistance to moisture showed the following: WVT: WVP: P: = 0.02 grams per m2 per hour = 0.48 grams per m2 per 24 hours desiccator = 0.00023 grams per m2 per 24 hours per millimeter of mercury (metric perms) = 0.0000292 grams, centimeter of thickness per m2 per 24 hours (metric perm-centimeter)

The results undoubtedly speak for themselves. Minimal preparation, ease of application and superior performance prove the STAC Coating System is an invaluable asset in the corrosion protection of pipes. 3. PE Outerwrap To protect the STAC corrosion barrier, the Splash-Pro system utilizes an outer layer of HDPE mechanical protection that is secured by corrosion resistant metal strapping. Central Plastics Co. has found that an outer layer of 2mm thickness HDPE provides 20 years of adequate mechanical protection in most environments. General Properties: Highly ultra violet resistance Unaffected by seawater Excellent low temperature properties High impact strength Good abrasion resistance Resilient Non-stick surface Excellent hinging properties Lightweight

3.1. Installation Preparation Below are dimensions to consider when preparing for installation: historical high, high tide: historical low, low tide: average high tide: average low tide: average tide: average difference: The total coverage area of each piling is recommended to be .6 m (2ft) above the average high tide and .6 m (2ft) below the average low tide. STACprime is recommended for a coverage of 0.9#/sqm (1#/20sq ft). STACwrap is covered to 50% overlap to provide 2-layer coverage. For pilings 1.2 m diameter and above, Central Plastics Co. recommends 6 inch (150mm) wide STACwrap. 3.2. Strapping System Our method of securing the PE Outerwrap consists of steel mechanical clamps. These clamps are available in several different steel types. Type 316 Type 316 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel/moly stainless with excellent corrosion resistant properties. It is used extensively in moist atmospheres and environments where it is subject to chemicals, salts, acids, and high temperatures. Type 317L Type 317L stainless steel is widely specified for applications requiring even greater corrosion resistance than Type 316 stainless. Monel 400 Monel 400 has a very high percentage nickel content (63-70%). It is used in special applications where extremely corrosive conditions exist. The material used varies by application, depending on environmental conditions, customer preferences, and the desired life of the protection system.
