HOLISTIC RESEARCH METHODS When was the concept of holism introduced? Holism is antique and derived from the Greek and Latin. A good example of holism is when a person is sick admitted in the hospital and when they are left alone, they would feel sad but when people comes in the visiting hours, he would feel much better. So when he is alone, he would be thinking deeply on matters. This could be holism. Holism is in sociology, psychology, philosophy, science and medicine. Yoga, aroma therapy, spas is antique methods of medicine. Now we are pre-discovering these ideas and putting this in to the new age. Meditation could be purely a psychological treatment. We need science and physics to connect each other. Hypnotism is not a part is of holism. It is purely a psychological and considered as

psychotherapeutically method. In design whatever we do, would affect people. It would perhaps affect unconsciously. People stay in front of billboard and posters and they could memorize these things easily because of the influence of the message sent. Holistic research methods emphasizes on the importance as a whole.

Stages involved Source data, Data collection, Data analysis. Techniques Qualitative and Quantitative Methods What is the connection between holism and Quantitative and Qualitative research methods? They both compliment each other. For example, if we need to create something new without reference then you would have to do on your own. So for innovation purposes, Research and Design people do holistic research methods. Say for instance, if we need create another method for communication to take over telephone, email, radio and etc The same goes with energy. When we run off with petrol, diesel, oil or any other source to find energy, to find a new source, we have to conduct holistic research methods. Holistic Research methods collect all possible related data. It may not directly relate to our interest or topic. For example, how come the people knew the way dinosaurs walked and still the animators animate the dinosaurs realistically? They existed long ago and disappeared. This is a holistic research method or holistic idea. SO, whatever we do empirical experiment of idea.

Observational Research Methods These are social research techniques that involve the

observational phenomena. Covert observational research Researchers do not identify themselves. Either they mix in with subjects undetected or they observe from a distance. Overt observational research The researchers identify themselves as a research and explain the purpose of their observation. Researcher participant The researcher participates in what they are observing so as to get a finer appreciation of the phenomena. Personal observation Observing products in use to defect usage patterns and problems. Observing license plates in store parking lots. Determining socio-economic status and shoppers. Determining level of package strutting.

Mechanical observation Eyetracking analysis while subjects while advertisements. Oculometers- what subject is looking it.

Pupilometer- how interested is the viewer, checks how the pupil dilates. Tachistoscope- flashes an ad to a subject at an exposure range from less one hundred in a second. Lectronic check out scanners- records purchase behavior on-site cameras in stores.

Neilson box Voice pitch meters- measures emotional research Psychogalvanometer.
