Description AspeakforaminuteactivitytopractisespeakingatlengthforPart2oftheSpeakingtest. Theactivity isdesigned to raise studentsawarenessofthe benefitsofthinking aboutand planningtheiranswers. Timerequired: Additional materials required: Aims: 45minutes asetofcardsforeachpairofstudents astopwatchoraccesstoaclockwithasecondhandforeachpairof students. toallowstudentstopractisespeakingatlengthonagiventopic toraisetheirawarenessofthebenefitsofthinkingaboutand planningtheiranswers.

Procedure 1. Divideyourclassintopairs. 2. Giveeachpairasetofabout20cards.Seesamplecardsforideas.Tellthemtoput thecardsfacedownbetweenthem. 3. Tellstudentshowtoplaythisgame:inpairs,eachstudentinturnpicksupacardand tellstheotherthetopicwrittenonit.S/Hethentalksaboutthetopicfor30seconds, timedbytheirpartner.Thelisteningstudentshouldthenaskthespeakeraquestion aboutwhathasbeensaid.Bothpartnershaveaturn. 4. ExplainthatintheSpeakingtest,candidateshave1minutetothinkabouttheir answerandmakeanynotestheywant.Timestudentsoneminutetodothisnow, usingthesametopiccard. 5. Redividetheclassintonewpairs.Eachstudentrepeatsthesametopiccard,butthis timetheyhavetospeakforaminute,timedbytheirnewpartner.Theirpartnershould thenaskthespeakeraquestionaboutwhathasbeensaid. 6. Askthesefollowupquestionsandhaveabriefclassdiscussionaboutthem: Howwasyourperformancedifferentbetweenthefirst(30second)andsecond(60 second)timeyouspokeabouteachtopic?Whichwasmoredifficult?(Theremay bealotofvariationinstudentanswershere,withsomefindingiteasierthesecond timeeventhoughitwaslonger,astheywereabletousesomeoftheiroriginal ideasandexpandonthem,butsomefindingiteasierthefirsttimeasitwasnttoo long)
