A substance added to a food-item to reduce its quality in order to increase its quantity is called as an adulterant. This act of addition of the adulterant in food-items is known as food adulteration. The addition of adulterant may be intentional or accidental. But generally the adulterant addition is intentional. The major reason for the intentional addition of these adulterants is for increasing the profit margin on the expense of the health of the public or consumer. Adulterant reduces the quality of the food and this weakens the health of the one who consumes them, thereby increasing the cost for healthcare. Regular intake of an adulterated food can lead to many health problems. From curable to incurable disorders and diseases can ruin ones lifestyle and life as well. The Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution (BSTI) is continuing its special drive across the country to examine the quality of products used by consumers in day-to-day life. The team has seized sub-standard goods which were illegally marketed. They are following Bangladesh Pure Food Ordinance 1959, section 18(1) of the constitution and also the Pure Food Act 2005. This much awaited and much-delayed drive is welcome news, though no "special drive" would be necessary if the relevant government agency kept its vigilance as an on-going exercise.

These days rarely any food item is spared from the malicious practice of food adulteration. Almost every food-item from milk to fruits, from vegetables to grains is added with adulterants. One of basic food, milk is commonly adulterated with water. These was the previous situation now a days it has changed. Newer ways are created and seen in the adulteration in the liquid food.

The most important liquid item is water. Mainly bottled water found in the market of Bangladeshi market which the customer rely on for their daily and most important need. As the water is life people try to believe on different renowned brand but the situation is :

There has been a common allegation that the different brands of bottled water marketed in the country are not as hygienically irreproachable as claimed. A newspaper report says that bottled water is plain deception. The label on the water gives a list of health-giving properties with which the water is posed to be fortified. It further claims that the prescribed standard of WHO has been adhered to and is certified by the BSTI (Bangladesh Standard Testing Institute). The fact is that, with some exceptions, the bottled water is tap water, plain and simple. The water is not even boiled and is found to contain germs of typhoid and cholera and so many of bacteria. News reports show that contaminated tap water is being used to fill up the so-called 'mineral water' bottles and marketed under the nose of the municipal inspectors.

Picture: court seize bottles and case against the organization.

The lids of these bottles are cleverly sealed with a plastic strip to make them appear unbroken, hence safe for consumption. Unknowingly people are drinking such highly contaminated water to the peril of their health. A news report in a local daily says that a large racket of counterfeit water bottles is located in the Sadarghat area where unscrupulous traders after buying empty bottles from individual collectors fill them up with untreated WASA water from the roadside taps and sell them to the consumers .This was the news of The Daily Independent 22th August,2000.

Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution (BSTI) is playing hide and seek over taking action against some of the companies involved in manufacturing hazardous condensed milk from vegetable fat instead of milk fat. The BSTI in October last year confirmed that five leading local companies were involved in manufacturing and marketing of the so-called condensed milk in the country. The companies are S A Condensed Milk Ltd, Danish Condensed Milk Bangladesh Ltd, Azad Dairy Products, Abul Khair Condensed Milk Industries Ltd and Meghna Condensed Milk Industries Ltd. marketing under the brand names of Danish, Goalini, Goala, Starship and Fresh Condensed Milk. This was the news of Daily Independent 21th January,2003. Normally the water mixing and the chemical mixing for long term use of the liquid food is reducing. They are using directly different chemicals as liquid food. For milk they are using powder milk as the liquid milk and the excessive use of a very harmful chemical name melamine found when the court announced its program to find out the food adulteration.

These are the scenario for the milk but the situation is much more dangerous for other liquid food like the juice is selling in the consumer market in Bangladesh. Normally the juice we are using here is Frutto, Frutika as the Bangladeshi liquid food. Artificial color of such juice is very much serious danger now. High level of fat is always available here and the huge amount of acid with preservatives which were more than the level human body can take.

This juice are containing too much chemical and low food vitamins. Whenever the court moves for them we see a lot of noise about their cheating. Roadside different types juice are not assured by the BSTI and they are not also hygienic as they are selling in the open space. So dust can also make them contaminated which may also contains a lot of germs. Whenever we open the page of newspaper we see a lot of claim against different such food seller.

So many organization make the program and seminars but they don't seem to have very effective some noise created but after a time all are in silent. So we need to concern our people about these types of food and their hygienic factors. Different NGO and government organization should make initiatives to come forward to concern the consumers. Government law should me more strong to eliminate those.
