VA VA VROOM.. Vintage and Classic Transport Sale Saturday 18th August 2012
A 1939 Leyland Cub fire engine will light up Chorleys Vintage and Classic Transport sale at Prinknash on Saturday 18th August 2012. From the estate of the late Melville Watts of Lydney, it is one of several of his vehicles included in the sale that were often seen at events in the Forest of Dean, the fire engine is estimated to sell for between 8,000 and 10,000. Motor cycles spanning 90 years are also included in the sale. The earliest, a 1922 New Imperial (2,000-3,000) and a 1926 BSA (2,000-3000), both from Mr Watts estate, will appear alongside later models, a 2010 Triumph Thruxton (4,500-5,500) and a 2008 Bonneville T100 from the same factory (4,000-5,000). The later models were kept by the late Mr Alec Lawless in a garage, the earlier models slightly less conventionally in the attic and cellar of Mr Watts Lydney home. A wonderful 1931 New Hudson 5 500 motorcycle beautifully restored and with a most unusual sidecar in the form of a boat is expected to sail away against its estimate of 11,000-12,000. Other fascinating classic bikes include a 1962 Greeves 25 (5,000-6,000) a 1960 James Captain 197 (1,200- 1,500) and a classic of the future, a fantastic example of a Triumph Thunderbird 900 (3,8004,200). The vintage motorcars offered in the August sale include two 1921 American Overland Tourers; one from Mr Watts estate, in recent restored condition (4,500-5,000), the other, in its original un-restored form, from a Tewkesbury client (4,750-5,750). Nine years their junior is a 1930 Alvis Silver Eagle beetleback; beautifully restored it is expected to achieve between 30,000 and 35,000. Another wonderful Alvis, a 1936 Firebird, will also be offered for sale. Again in fine condition, with tax

A British Lea-Francis 2.5 litre Sports Special Convertible will also be in the race. The white painted two-seater started life in 1950 as a four light saloon. It was rebuilt in the mid 1980s on a shortened chassis using the original 14HP engine and it is expected to achieve a speedy 14,500. From earlier days, a horse drawn coach by Fullers of Bristol is included in the sale. John Fuller and Son were carriage and hearse makers for over 100 years and this carriage should achieve 1,800-2,200. The transport sale will include Automobilia and Aeronautica with a fascinating collection of early handbooks, vehicle and bicycle carbide and acetylene lamps, car horns, firemens helmets, oil cans and signs, while prices are sure to take off with Sopwith propeller parts, flying caps and aeronautical instruments.
